Superman and Wonder Woman get really really really serious redesign

Wonder Woman's redesign is pretty bad. It looks a lot like the old Wonder Woman outfit, but with her armour on top of a black body stocking. And the pointy bits on her arms are a lot more God of War than she has been previously (Is that where they're going with her still? God of War?). Somebody else pointed out that it looks like somebody has taken a look at Jamie McKelvie's Captain Marvel and said "This works" and mashed the two together. And is her bodice armoured, or so skintight that you can see her abs through it?

And it isn't like there haven't been a few good Wonder Woman redesigns recently, thanks to Sensation comics.

The Wonder Woman would be okay if not for the extraneous details and shiny bits. The loincloth, the pauldrons, the blades the thigh high boots, and whats with the star on her side? Who puts the insignia there?

Wonder Woman design: Not feeling the arm blades, as they don't have the Greek inspired look that I think feels right for her. I've always thought she should look vaguely like a hoplite in the armor, with various trim. So... not really feeling this.

Superman: No. Just no. So many kinds of no.

Oh god is Frank Miller writing Superman!

Superman: I pound away at Parasites's face pound for almost an eternity.
But than I stop, stop when I realize I'm fighting the wrong war, war.

Also why does Wonder Woman wear 90's gauntlet shivs. Seems a bit redundant since she carries a sword sometimes.

Clark, that look doesn't work as good as your original New-52 outfit. Might just be the art.

DC, here's a thought: why not use the iconic costumes? They seemed to work for over seven decades. *sigh*

From what I'm gathering about the post-Convergence DCU, it looks like there probably will in fact be titles with the characters in the iconic looks being published.

Basically: The "New 52" universe will continue and be the "core" titles with an ongoing continuity. Then it sounds like there's going to be a bunch of multiverse books where continuity and such are not nearly as important.

So maybe the "New 52" side is allowed to take bigger risks with redesigns and storylines now that there's alternative avenues of keeping the characters in their familiar/marketable forms.

Or this is a big fake-out and the version of Superman and Wonder Woman we're seeing here is actually for one of the multiverse-titles. Wouldn't be the first time comic publishers have hyped something like this only to have it turn out to be not such a big deal after all.

I think WW's could work if they changed the boots and ditched the blades, the see-through material, the stars on her torso, the weird flappy things... So yeah, it's pretty bad.

Superman should skip Casual Friday. And fire whoever cut his hair.

Anyone remember when WW was primarily non-lethal...? In other words, ditch the blades. This makes her look incredibly stabby.

The red and blue should be a bit lighter... could lose the pauldrons....

Still, there's some good elements there. Back in gold! Skirt-thingy over pants!

But she's a barbarian goddess now! A goddess of WAR, as she is keen to remind passersby. And what's more warlike than carrying giant arm-knives around at all times? Nothing, that's what!

I miss when she was a teacher of kindness, gentility and compassion, too...

I am ambivalent about WW's redesign, except that the blades on her bracers aggravate me to a degree I wouldn't have thought possible, since I don't even really read her comics. Her bracers are purely defensive; adding blades to them would be like sticking a spike onto Captain America's shield. If you want her to carry a weapon, why not just give her a sword? She's used those before.

Methinks that they can also probably act as pritective extensions should she miss a projectile (like with Siracca), though at the same time that would make deflection slightly more cumbersome should they be too heavy.

If it was toned down a bit (no gauntlet shivs, no thigh high boots, no shoulder pads, no collar), I'd be fine with the Wonder Woman costume.

I'm more bothered by Superman's haircut than the costume. I do like the Golden Age shield.

I know that comic characters are ever-evolving and all that jazz but Superman looks like a generic thug in that cover basically the opposite of interesting.

Wait, so after Convergence, both Superman titles are going to have Asian-American writers? That's... pretty amazing, really.

(Seriously, not counting fill-ins, did the Superman books ever have even a single non-white writer before now?)

That's the cover to Superman/Batman. The mecha is supposed to be Batman, or at least a Batman. Snyder called it robo-bunny on twitter, though, and that's what I'm sticking with.

Wondy looks great, minus the pointy bits on her wrists. Superman looks like an angry henchman who gets beaten up in two panels.

It's not the general paradigm that's the problem; it's the execution. The hair, the facial expression, the blood, and for me at least, the tiny head.

I'm still really surprised that DC hasn't launched the Finch's off Wonder Woman and onto another book. The buzz surrounding the book was terrible even prior to the change in teams, and it's just abysmal. Say what you want about Azz's writing, but Chiang's art was miles ahead of that.

I feel as though they created this outfit for Wondy and then showed it to a P:R committee, who then said they should make sure it covers her better; so then they took it away and just coloured in her arms and legs black.
