Oh come on DC, really? Lois Lane would never do that to Clark, with going behind his back and revealing his secret to the world in a dirty sleazy way. So Clark is going to be in a dark bitter resentful mood, because one of his friends betray him?
You know I was excited for Superman post-Convergence. People said that it looked like it was trying to make Superman "edgier," but I did not see it as I loved the return of jeans and t-shirt Superman with the Max Fleischer "S!" (Oh the nostalgia.) I also didn't mind Superman's identity being revealed as it was something different that has never happened in mainstream continuity. Unfortunately, after hearing this news, and seeing Lois and Clark's interaction my excitement has gone down.
Despite that one scene in Mark Waid's IRREDEEMABLE, I don't see Lois Lane as being that spiteful over Clark "fooling her" for so long. On the other hand, I liked how SMALLVILLE and MAN OF STEEL has Lois in on "The Secret" from the start.
That's not true - whilst she knows Clark is Superman when he officially reveals his existence to the world in the series finale, Lois still has 4 or 5 years where she's being lied to about it.
In fact, it's debatable that Smallville!Lois has more right to be pissed New52!Lois, since it's not just Clark lying to her.
The thing about Irredeemable is, the Plutonian dated Alana AS the Plutonian. She just knew his Clark Kent style identity as the dork she worked with who had a bit of a crush on her. Then he proposes to her as the Clark Kent style identity, then reveals the secret immediately after, causing her to freak out (it helps that she also revealed his identity on impulse immediately afterwards).
When they decided to have Clark and Lois marry post-crisis, not only were Superman and Lois never actually an item (I think), the entire romance was AS Clark, and she got engaged to CLARK. He only revealed the secret after the engagement, by switching from Clark clothes to Superman ones (she still punches him, but still.)
This was a premeditated thing, painted entirely to make Lois look like some harpy who can't get over him keeping a secret from her, despite the fact that they were NEVER an item in the nu52. Even the panels with her apologizing for it are done in a way that "she feels bad because what she did was awful and she's awful for doing it".
I keep wanting to like Superman, but it feels like DC is bound and determined to avoid doing any Superman story that I'd actually like. Ever since the New 52 launch, I feel like Action Comics under Morrison and Morales is the only book that didn't just do a bunch of "sad Superman" stories.
But that showcases how Superman can be inspiring and how sometimes you can solve a problem by listening and talking rather than punching it with enough force to explode a human skull. Can't have that, now can we?
I'd say those stories are more the exception than the rule, the trend seems to be to do optimistic Superman stuff as a breather and a way of resetting things. So we'll get a lighthearted one shot, but then it's right into the next long arc about how much Superman's life sucks.
So much for Convergence being a soft reboot of the reboot to make things better. If there's anything the last few years have taught us is, wow, the brass at DC's publishing side really have issues with Lois Lane.
I wonder how their parent company where Lois is still an important character in the movies/tv/etc. feel about this.
This. Until Johns and Didio are out on the street, I'm not spending money on a DC Comic unless Neil Gaiman has a writing credit on it. (Or, theoretically, Alan Moore, but I assume Hell freezing over would interfere with the printing process.)
I'm fine with Johns. I loved his Green Lantern, I liked his Aquaman. What makes you think he's a key player in this, besides writing what he's told to.
Johns has been DC's Chief Creative Officer for the past 5 years, so I assume some responsibility for the trainwreck the company's properties have been engaged in can be laid at his feet.
I really liked Johns' early work on the JSA, and will give him credit for undoing much of the hatchet job Kevin Dooley and Ron Marz did on Green Lantern in the 90s. But his worked veered too far into grim & grittiness for its own sake, and the disrespect with which he treated the original Golden Age Superman in his Infinite Crisis series was my breaking point with the company as a whole.
Well, I swore my "As God is my witness, I'll never buy DC again!" oath back in 2007, so Promethea was still fresh in my mind at the time and I wanted to leave an out if the infinitely improbable happened. Gaiman was the only exception I seriously expected to make use of.
So Superman becomes just another hero who can beat up anybody; just like the rest of them.
And we're supposed to cheer?
As Jules Fieffer wrote long ago, what makes Superman interesting is his point of origin: Clark Kent.
Look, there are some superheroes where you can easily get rid of their secret identity and have an interesting character. Nobody really misses Don Blake. Tony Stark being admittedly Iron Man ruins nothing. But there are a few where it's intrinsic to the character.
Superman is definitely one of these.
I met my wife through the Superman lettercols of Julie Schwartz. We'll be celebrating our 35th anniversary next month. (Some of you may remember a letterhack called "Al Schroeder III". Barb and my marriage was mentioned when we helped pick out the stories in the first edition of THE GREATEST SUPERMAN STORIES EVER TOLD.)
I read this news Friday afternoon...and it ruined my afternoon.
Ave atque vale, Clark. Oh, yeah, I know that's Superman's real name...but you just took away our point of identification for one of the mightiest heroes of all.
Idiotic decision.
Oh, well, the next movie that comes out with Clark Kent--the traditional Clark Kent--in it--they'll reboot time yet again and back he'll be.
