Today marks the release of A-Force, the all-female Avengers team spinning out of Secret Wars. It is very awesome. We meet the heroines while they're attacked by a giant, mutated shark. If that description doesn't grab your attention, perhaps the roster will...










I can't get the scans to be less blurry (Photobucket is being nasty today) but the thing America is saying on the last page is "Nobody tell PETA".

The scans are so blurry I didn't notice Miss America being there at first, so I thought Carol punched a shark and then threw it up while yelling "AMERICA!"

Also just an observation but it's kind of neat how Matt Fraction's tweet-inspired descriptions from his X-men run has caught on.... It is useful for large superhero teams.

Apparently A-Force's fiefdom (or whatever) is so Utopic that PETA is somehow a benign organisation that nobody wants to offend.

It's part of the Secret War thing--every kingdom/part of Battleworld has a Baron or Baroness that instills Doctor Doom's reign. She-Hulk rules Arcadia, Norman Osborn runs Spider-Island, and so on.

Dependent on the portrayal, she's been able to do it before - Claremont had her manipulating photons to fly early on in New Excalibur... Before he tried to turn her into Psylocke 2.0.

I'm trying to imagine the sheer volume of photons you'd need to blast out of your body in order to get yourself aloft. I'm guessing it's in the vicinity of "Damn, that's a lethally bright light."

Am I right in understanding that this is supposed to be an ongoing after Secret Wars ends? Because while the concept for the book is solid, launching it out of a pretty insular crossover, into which it's pretty closely tied, seems like it could hamstring the book.

They might tweak it a bit and make it into a more simplified all-female Avengers book the same way X-Men became an all-female title. That would mean Nico and Dazzler becoming Avengers... but at this point we can assume that everyone ever will become an Avenger, so why not them.

That's what I'm expecting, but it's still a weird way to launch it. Mavel did the same thing with Spider-Woman, tying the first arc in with Spider-Verse, and that seemed more like a handicap than a bonus as far as I was concerned. I don't understand the logic behind having this big book come out as a weird and potential confusion Secret Wars title rather than just waiting and giving it a normal #1 afterward.

I don't understand the roster. Why is Dazzler there? And not some more obvious character like Storm? The Sister Grimm's powers seem limited. Scarlet Witch seems a more strategically sound choice, despite her penchant for Scarlet Witching everything from time to time. Is Ms. America Cap's daughter? And if so, does the super soldier serum pass on, and how can she fly? This team seems like leftovers and Carol Danvers. And of course She-Hulk.

Ms. America is most definitely not Cap's daughter. She's from a universe of her own, outside 616, or Ultimates, or anything. Besides flight, super strength, and nigh-invulnerability, she punches holes in reality.* And I think very few Young Avengers fans would call her "leftovers." More like, "Oh my god, America is finally in a book again. It's about time."


*Or at least the main version of her does. And that should be the only version. Kieron Gillen has confirmed that there's only one America Chavez in the multi-verse, but, well, comics.

She seems emotionally immature (stubborn, angsty), I probably should've guessed she was from one of the Teen books. Imagine you're sitting in with (I assume) Carol and Jen putting this team together. Doesn't picking teenagers seem a little leftovery? I'm assuming due to the restrictive nature of the setting, they can't just call up the people in their phone contacts (putting together an Avengers team with Carol and Jen's phone contacts is totally doable), but Miss America and Sister Grimm seem desperate choices.

On the other hand, after a quick Google search, they seem to be quite the fan favorites. So that's probably why. Well-played, Marvel. I'm sitting here pointing out the flawed strategy of characters who should know how to put a team together, completely ignoring the concerted strategy of market writers who know how to increase the number of people who will purchase.

But Dazzler. Dazzler will keep me up formulating on my walls for weeks. Phrasing, context.
