Charles Soule: It begins six years after the point where the original Civil War ended, by Captain America surrendering to Iron Man in the big Times Square battle. However, in this story, that didn’t happen, and the Civil War didn’t end. In fact, it spilled out, became much larger, and involved every person in the country, powered or not.

It’s completely self-contained. For all intents and purposes, it’s the United States, although changed drastically due to six years of super-hero Civil War. Steve Rogers holds one territory, called the Blue (whose capital city is Liberation), and Tony Stark holds the other, called the Iron (the capital there is Resilient Alpha). They feel very different, as you might expect. There are many surprises hiding in the Warzone beyond that, but let’s let the readers find them on their own, yeah?

That last one slays me.

Iron Man: This is my Spider-man!

Cap: No! I want it!

Iron Man: Stop it, you're gonna break it!

Cap: You stop!

Spidey; Don't I get a say in this?

Cap and Iron Man: NO!

If Spider-Man's smart, he'll play the parentsheroic archetypes off each other and make out like a bandit. Tony, of course, will be the one who gives him all the porn.

Yeah, because we really need another nail in the coffin of comics' pretty insignificant and shitty sales. Great attitude.

By all means, let's hope for crappy comics that fetishize the writing mistakes of yesteryear to be financial successes!

While I agree I don't want it to do bad, comics are doing well sales wise. Like, *really* well.

April set records, highest in units since '97 (which was during the variant cover/speculator era), and dollars since who knows when?

Marvel's in good enough shape that SW:CW would barely be noticeable to them. Thanks to Star Wars, they beat DC on DC's big event month.

Yeah because you can totally tell if a comic is gonna be a mess from 2 uncolored unlettered pages and a cover.

I was referring to the concept of Civil War returning not the art. Though the art has been slipping in quality of late not as clean during his Secret Invasion work.

Civil War as a concept isn't really a bad idea, it just got handled very poorly and ended up being a gargantuan piece of utter crap. Under Soule, who's proved his mettle to me many times thus far I think the concept can be done well.

I would like Civil War if both sides were equally well-argued and likeable, which is perfectly plausible for the promise. Sadly, in execution they weren't, and from the looks of it, they won't be in this one either.

Yay! One of the worst Marvel series in memory, rating right up (down?) there with DC's Identity Crisis -- so we can have another run at this thing?

Ug. Pass. Looks like Secret Wars is a great jumping-off point for Marvel.

And why would Bucky side with Tony and not Steve?

Why would Damian side with Superman, and not Bruce? Ideologies can change and beliefs can be altered (many people changed sides following Goliath's death). Six years is a long time.

Also, if I'm not being rude or opinionated, may I ask what was so bad about Civil War? And are you really going to let one Warzones tale (self contained stories with little bearing on the rest of Secret Wars) affect your opinion on the whole event?

You're not being at all being rude or opinionated.

IMHO, Civil War suffers from the same overall problems as Identity Crisis (and Injustice For All), it did enormous damage to a comic universe for the sake of a "serious" story that really wasn't. At least Injustice wasn't standard universe canon the way the other two were (it wouldn't have made the stories better, IMHO, but being Elseworlds/What If stories would have contained the damage somewhat).

It threw out decades of characterization for the sake of a big fight, and even worse, one of the fill-in books, the one where Tony and Steve sit down and TALK, is something that should have happened BEFORE they fought.

It's not JUST this series that is making me consider jumping off, but it strikes me as one of their poorer choices (sales numbers notwithstanding) because, again IMHO, it just wasn't a good story. Poor construction, nonexistent editing, and writers making characters have whiplash characterization (Stark, depending on if Millar or JMS was writing him) were all problems that I am not convinced will be any better the second time around.

Again, all IMHO.

(And I don't think Damian WOULD side with Superman :) )

Though calling it "Iron" isn't that much better. 1) it gives way too much prominence to Iron Man as a personality; Tony was a dick in Civil War, but he wasn't Inverted Tony yet, he wanted to work with civil authorities, not be the Great Leader; and 2) $5 says Iron Man rules the Iron with an Iron Hand…

That Spider-Man looks like he gained about 50 pounds. I guess Cap wants to get him to the gym but Stark wants to put him on a paleo diet.
