...as a Truly OUTRAGEOUS post
(Sorry, I had to get that out of my system and better now than later)
Now as you know, I pride myself on being the manliest of men, the most testosterone-driven pile of XY chromosome derived masculinity as you could ever hope to meet...
And like all manly men, I have an unfeasily large interest in a mid 1980's cartoon series called "Jem", a series with an almost entirely female cast (only three regular male characters over the whole series; the heroine's boyfriend, the evil manager, and a rival band's lead singer in the last run of episodes) and featuring more female agency than most other cartoon series since the mid 1980's combined! In the words of the theme song there was 'Glamour and Glitter, Fashion and Fame', but also adventure, romance, a heroine who is an executive as well as a pop star, some sci fi in the form of her hologram projecting earrings, exotic locations and... well, pretty much everything you'd hope for in a cartoon (and no ccomedy relief pets!)
I posted some of the preview character bios, and also a little sample of #2 a few weeks back, but those are the only posted pages on S-D do far (somewhat to my surprise), so I though that, now #3 is out, I would make a slightly longer look at it, because by heck it deserves one.
The trailer for the live action Jem movie debuted last week and it was met with... let's not overstate the case... absolute and utter loathing by all who saw it... The reaction to the trailer made the reaction to "Transformers: Age of Extinction" look like heavenly psalms of praise, I suspect people would rather watch "Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2" on infinite loop forever than....but I'll get back to that.
Let's say that the comic version of the series, whilst distinctly a reworking rather than a continuation, is getting much better reviews from the fanbase (aside from a couple of the slightly scary fans who see anything which is differnet as a threat, but every fanbase has those and the rest of us try to keep them in check, or ignore them)
The original series had Jerrica Benton, a young woman who had inherited half a music company from her father, engage in a "Battle of the Bands" with her corrupt sleaze of a co-owner, for complete ownership and in the process creates a stage persona for herself to do so. The new take has a different approach, of as Jerrica is not an executive yet, she's the lead singer/manager of an aspiring band.
We open with this scene...

Jerrica is, as well as being band manager, in possession of a spectacular singing voice and a deal of talent as a songwriter but has one little problem; absolute and completely crippling stage fright.
When she's with her sisters (Kimber is her biological sister, Aja and Kimber are her adoptive sisters) and certain other people she knows really well, she can sing fine, but if there is even ONE other person there (like, say a cameraman and/or the sound recorders), she freezes completely.
(An interesting take on the concept which does explain better than the cartoon why no one had ever heard Jerrica sing and linked her with Jem)
This is the third video shoot she's set up, and now it's the third one she's had to cancel, and the deadline for the competition they're entering "The Misfits Vs...." is the following day.
Kimber seeks out Jerrica, who has fled the building in embarassment, she's hoping an ultimatum will help. If Jerrica can't get herself together enough to perform, then Kimber is out of the band....

aja and Shana might be prepared to give her more time, but Kimber just... can't any more.
Kimber rejoins the others to let them know Jerrica will be in shortly but, like siblings tend to do, an argument breaks out...

Jerrica leaves again, she's more stressed out than the rest of them combined... she heads home (in the middle of a thunderstorm no less), where she feels safe.
Now there is an important member of the cast who has to be introduced, the real sci-fi element of the concept and a wonderful plot device...

Her description of her self as "The ultimate audio visual entertainment synthesizer" is taken diretly from the pilot episode of the cartoon)
This is Synergy's cartoon look circa 1986
And I can that look being extrapolated into this new one.
Synergy tells Jerrica how to open the safe in her father's office that no one had been able to open since his death and inside finds a gift he had intended to give to her...

Her sisters arrive back at the house to find... well, things have gone a little odd.

Synergy then gives them a seven digit code for the jukebox her father kept in his study.

They climb the stairs to find themselves ina TARDIS Console room Synergy's actual "self"

(That's a valid question there Kimber, and one I suspect the comic will explore more than the cartoon ever did)
Again, this is a variation on Synergy's real form from the 1980's

You can see that Sophie Campbell has put some thiought into this, and the jukebox looks rather like elements of Synergy's console.
Synergy demonstrates some of her abilities, like creating a perfect image of Jerrica... Kimber wants to see Synergy create a copy of her, but...

But amidst the fun and games that uch things allow, Jerrica, also a computer whiz it would appear, has had an idea...

Yup, it's THAT moment!! :)

Stylish! :D
It proves to be perfect for Jerrica: Jerrica can't sing in public, but if she's NOT Jerrica, then she can. It's like a rather more extreme version of an online presence, she IS her own online ID.
And of course, with the range of abilities that Synergy grants them, they have a whole new approach to visual FX for their video....
(As mentioned, I posted four pages from #2 already, so we've only got three left, and this one I include because it instantly shows what the band is capable of creating at short notice...

The Misfits (other than Pizzazz) have to admit that they may be pure pop, but Jem and the Holograms have a definitely something going for them (as evinced by massive viewings on the competition video site); they have clearly been playing together for a long time, they have a good beat, a lead singer with a great voice and how they managed some of the extraordinary effects in their video are baffling.
Rio, a music journalist writing about The Misfits for the "Vs.." competition has plans of his own, it doesn't take much doing for him to track this mysterious new band back to their manager, one Jerrica Benton.
Now in the cartoon, Jerrica and her sisters originally lived in, and ran, Starlight House, an orphanage/foster care home for young girls, set up by their mother (who had been adopted herself).
In this iteration there is no orphanage, but there is the Starlight Community Centre that their parents set up and which they volunteer at every week (teaching music, amongst other things). Several characters from the original show also show up here, the Starlight Hour housekeeper Mrs Bailey is now the Community Centre manager, and several of the foster girls - Banee and Ashley appear.
Conveniently, a fundraiser is being held there athe following week and the headlining MC had to pull out, and Mrs Bailey wondered if Jem and the Holograms might be convinced to perform instead, which Jerrica is happy to agree to.
Meanwhile someone else shows up...

(Pretty little thing, isn't he! :) )
Jerrica is curious, and a little disconcerted that someone was able to track her down like this and want's to know how... (Oh and I love her reaction in the second panel, you can just hear the slightly "You don't say" tone to it)

Rio accepts that, and then asks her out to dinner, which is somewhat out of the blue.
Jerrica suspects he just wants to get info to write about the band, but he admits he can't he's only allowed to cover The Misfits for his articles. He just liked the Jem and the Holograms song and wanted to find out more about them for himself, but now he's met Jerrica he would like to find out more about HER, since shes talented, ambitious and adorable.
Rising to the challenge, Jerrica says yes.
Meanwhile, there is another romance possibly on the cards..

So in this iteration, Kimber and Stormer (who is still the only "nice" Misfit) both have an eye for the ladies. In the original cartoon they became friends (to their repsective bandmates horror) and collaborators on an album of their own.
However, the notion they would be romantically involved was never even hinted at, though I believe it's been a popular slash pairing ever since.
Sadly, their nice cup of coffee is interrupted by Pizzazz and the other Misfits, who are appalled to see Stormer consorting with the enemy and who start a massive scene in the cafe.
Which leads us into #3... (Which has three strong and fun plots running through it, making selecting four pages worth to be a pain, but I'll try.
I include these panels partly because it's nice to see that Pizzazz doesn't care that Stormer is a lesbian (presumably she already knows), she's pissed off that Stormer is possibly getting involved with THE ENEMY!, but mostly because of the awesome hairstyles the ladies have hear, especially Jetta's coiff!

Clash, was a semi-regular in the show, she was a Misfit's groupie who wanted more than anything to be the fourth (and then after Jetta joined, the fifth) Misfit, but everyone other than her knew it was a hopeless case. This time around she's still a groupie, but perhaps a little more of a threat, since she's VERY protective of HER group and will stop at nothing to make sure that nothing gets between them and the stardom they deserve.... she's slightly scarily obsessive in other words.
Meanwhile back at the Benton's, Kimber is surprised, but delighted, that Jerrica is going out on a date, a pretty much unheard of occurence, but also wants to talk about her own situation and how she feels she might actually be interested in someone who is out of her league.

I love the sisterly body language here, the complete comfort they have in each other.
Elsewhere, Rio has decided he's going to be completely cliché, but at least be upfront about it, by taking Jerrica to the funfair for their date. And Jerica finds herself opening up to Rio more than she might have expected....

Rio asks about her own songwriting talents again, but understands her reluctance to even try to perform.

Oh Rio sweetheart, you didn't figure it out in 65 episodes, what makes you think you'll manage it in this iteration? (Though Kelly Thompson has mentioned they'll be addressing the matter of the Jerrica/Rio/Jem dynamic in a less weird manner than the show did).
The date goes well, even if Rio has to be reminded that to be a properly cliché funfair date, Jerrica should have at least one oversized stuffed toy!
Another scene included mostly for the hairstyles of the Misfits (Who are trying to shoot a video) and Roxy's reaction to cruelty to bagels.

Pizzazz has just found out about the fundraiser and is outraged that Jem and the Holograms are using the Misfits competition as a springboard for their own careers. The giotar smashing tantrum she throws measures on the Richter scale (again, totally in keeping with her personality)
And back at the Benton's Kimber is sort of digging a hole for herself, as she feels she can't tell her sisters that her crush is Stormer of The Misfits so is trying to explain how she wants to speak to her again, without mentioning her by name. After the bustup in the cafe (where Kimber ducked out on Stormer to avoid further confrontation) she hasn't contacted her again, Shana is NOT impressed by this...

Again, yup, these are sisters! :)
The issue ends with a two page montage of the various threads of the story, with a voiceover from Clash as she calls an old friend, a young lady known as Blaze (Who is another newcomer to the series and is transgender, though that hasn't been mentioned on panel yet)
We see Rio and Jerrica returning from a succesful date, Kimber and Stormer getting in touch, an effecitvely lonely looking Pizzazz who is realising that she might not have everything her own way in this competition (and Pizzazz is VERY used to getting her own way). Aja and Shana chatting together....

He got her a Rainbow Dash, YAY!
Elsewhere we also see, in a lovely contrast to the sisterly companionship of the Holograms or the warmrth of the romances, Jetta eating a bacon sandwish and Roxy painting her nails! :)
Oh, and Rio and Jerrica have a proper kiss at the end.
See, now what I like about this is pretty much everything I dislike about the live action trailer. I have no axe to grind about the casting per se, and Audrey Peeples seems to have a decent voice, and I have a deal of sympathy with the actors involved in this. It's the plot that sets my teeth on edge.
The movie has, by all accounts, no Misfits, and Synergy is most likely absent. "Jem" is the creation of Erica Raymond's (in a nod to the original Eric Raymond, who I hope will be appearing in the comic sooner or later) Marketing Department, and the Holograms are all very young (in the cartoon, the Holograms were all college graduates (or college age at least), and in this comic Kimber mentions that their parents insisted that Kimber graduate High School before pursuing a music career.
So Jerrica is deprived of most of her origin, the science fiction aspect, all of her agency in creating the Jem persona and just about everything that made the Jem cartoon so different from anything before and since.
Perhaps weirdest of all, the trailer, about a girl group, and one being marketed for the movie has as the lead-out music for the trailer, a 1-Direction song, a BOYband... that hardly speaks to confidence in your product does it?
Now it COULD be that this is a major fake out, and we'll see the Misfits, and Synergy Who does, (rather bafflingly) get a namecheck and it'll be awesome, but if so, it's one HELL of a fake out based on this trailer.
But in the meantime I AM enjoying the comic, so let's think positive thoughts! :)
(Sorry, I had to get that out of my system and better now than later)

TRULY OUTRAGEOUS. I think I need to start getting this series. Maybe I can wait until the first trade, so I can get the first storyline all at once though.

The Misfits warn *she's a naive girl who's totally gonna break your heart, Stormer*.

Since Hasbro has been granted the Disney Princess license they must be beefing up their fashion doll tooling, and I imagine there will be some toy support for this movie, and along with those dolls probably a retro-line... then maybe a cartoon.
I just want to hold out judgement, I don't think the first trailer is enough to go by.
