Following from the events of Fight Club, Sebastian (the unnamed protagonist) has submerged his alter ego Tyler Durden via medication and is living a boring life with Marla and their son.

While Sebastian sleeps, Marla carries on an affair with 'Tyler'.

Later...

Palahniuk is damned lucky he got partnered with Stewart on this, because it's really apparent he's not written comics before.

He has Joss Whedon's problem, in that the majority of his characters' speech is either monologues or pithy one-liners, neither of which arise out of natural dialogue. In a prose book this is OK because we know we're just getting snippets of the characters' lives, often from their own filtered perspective, and can extrapolate that they have normal conversations when we're not reading about them; but in comics, with the added visual cues, it just feels disjointed, like we keep channel-flipping back and forth from this story to something else.

I feel like this is also why a lot of people have a problem with Grant Morrison, though I think he does it deliberately.

My first instinct to seeing Palahniuk doing a sequel to Fight Club is approximate to "pfft, sellout" but the distinct lack of Ed Norton and Brad Pitt lessens that.

Perhaps it could be CP trying to counteract how pop culture has completely mangled his book and took the exact opposite message from it.`

But the setup of this seems like it flows more smoothly from the movie's ending than the novel's, though that could just be the writer setting up a clean slate to work with.

Palahniuk has said that he prefers the movie's ending, but this comic has to be 100% a sequel to the book for legal reasons. They're not allowed to use any of Norton or Pitt's likeness, or any logos, costumes, dialogue, etc. that were invented for the movie.

The meta stuff with the objects covering the art and deliberate printing errors, though, are Palahniuk's homage to David Fincher.

"What's the worst that could happen?" I dunno, Palahniuk resorting to the idiot ball to get stuff rolling?

I think the biggest problem with this is that the only thing that felt really different from the original was the child, who disappointingly reads exactly like a tiny Tyler Durden. As I recall, his only line was "Did you know you can make gunpowder from fat?"

Gotta say I'm not optimistic about the suggestion (both here and in some of the solicits) that Tyler Durden is more than just a voice in the narrator's head. It just seems like making the character out to be more than he is.

I mean, the same thing happened with the Dark Passenger in the Dexter novels, and isn't that widely regarded as a jumping the shark moments?

Palahniuk has a right to be annoyed that people "misread" Fight Club.

I sometimes think people misread Point Break. "Oh, why can't Johnny Utah leave Bodhi alone to rob banks and surf?"
