???? What? Since when does bio-engineering - even in the case of something like the X-Gene which was actually developed in the Ultimate Universe - equal 'tech'? It's developed through the use of tech, sure, but it's an addition to a human's BIOLOGY.
Val Cooper needs to a - work on being less of a piece of crap in how flippant she is, and b - go back to high school science, from the look of things.
I think she was trying to say that it was some sort of techno-organic virus. Kind of like nanites or a microscopic cyborg or something. So he can communicate with the machine part and tell it to stop.
I know that sounds incredibly stupid, and that's because it is. But the alternative, where an adviser to the President of the United States on mutant affairs in the 21st century doesn't even know the basics of what bio-engineering is, is infinitely stupider. And my brain can't handle the possibility
I'm going with the latter, that 'an adviser to the President of the United States on mutant affairs in the 21st century doesn't even know the basics of what bio-engineering is'. Just because that seems more likely, and is a pretty shocking flub for someone like Nick Spencer, who usually does awesome work.
Oh no, I agree that is more than likely what the case really is here. I'm just saying that the idea of it is too stupid for me to comprehend. I can't help but facepalm whenever I think about it.
Don't worry - at least you're not alone in facepalming. It is a bit of a flub; I think the likes of Ellis with their authentic-sounding science-stuff have spoiled me.
Sometimes I get the feeling that people working with the Ultimate continuity try for something more essentially different than merely "edgier versions of 616 characters", but it usually ends up either being derivative of older and better SF work, or just plain dumb.
Or you could say they he single handily stopped the Sentinel program, ended the concentration camps, and united humans and mutants to a common purpose. Masterful work actually......aside from the genocide I mean.
Sometimes that worked, though. Ultimate Fantastic Four wasn't anything to write home about, but I did actually kind of like that Reed's continued fucking up and callousness was fully developed into him going supervillain. Or maybe it's just that I like anything that kind of takes the nice guy thing and is like, "actually, this guy is a total selfish asshole".
I realize that against the larger background of selfish assholes in the UU, it can get lost, but that one at least I felt was richly deserved.

Of course that kind of applies to the entire post-Ultimatum universe except maybe Spider-Man.
