Steven Universe...3 panels that perfectly display Pearl and Amethyst's personalities...

I've recently gotten into Steven Universe, which is a fun as hell show, and decided to look up the comics to tide me over until the series resumes...as anthology comics, they're predictably uneven, often being somewhat out of character...but one story from issue 5 struck me as a rather perfect snapshot of Pearl and Amethyst...



A predictable enough sequence, to be sure, but it's so very well done, I think. The art is gorgeous (even if Pearl's hair is a bit oversaturated...a common issue in the colour stories), and Pearl's speech balloon 'stabbing' Amethyst is a cute visual trick, which I always enjoy when I see it used. And the lettering style captures Pearl's diction perfectly, IMO.

I also like the short story where each of the Gems tries to make a birthday cake for Steven. Also seems to have a fun representation of their characters.

The art is gorgeous. Love Adventure Time and Steven Universe's habit of hiring artists outside of comics to do stories.

Need to watch Steven Universe, heard nothing but good things about it.

It's kind of a slow build, but when it gets going it manages to balance out its worldbuilding and slice-of-life stuff pretty well.

Plus, it has Estelle as one of the main characters (Garnet) and Joel from MST3k is a reoccuring character in it (Mayor Dewey).

That may be my problem, I watched a few early episodes and liked the concept but just didn't get "into" it the way I do with other series.

The more I hear about the direction it's gone, and the radical and admirable choices it's taken about the Gems, the more I think about giving it another try.

I bounced off it a few times- turned out I happened to hit IMO some of the weaker eps.

Caught a good one on TV, loved it, went back and watched 'major' plot eps, loved them, went through and watched the rest, more hits that misses.
