"[Morrison] doesn’t own the characters but if I thought it was going to piss him off, I would’ve bowed out. He thought it sounded neat. He told me to go for it. He also gave me a couple ideas he thought I should use." - Chris Burnham

Okay, so in the future everyone will look hideous and become raging assholes with no interesting characterization left?

Well, you've just summarised my opinion of much (not all, but much) of the 1990's comic-verse! :)

The artwork makes it a little hard to figure who are actually mutated at times...

And all the X-Men/mutant themed Secret Wars tie-ins are confusing. I honestly have no idea what version of what is the Baron or members of each tie-in except for X-Men '92 at this point.

So it's just like the regular X-titles then?

Multiplied by seeing over 5 different versions of Cyclops or the bigger name mutants at this point.

Some are distinct enough but the rest, I can't even tell what era or time period the tie-ins are suppose to be from or in.

It's getting muddied. For example the Old Man Logan Wolverine has crossed into the Age of Apocalypse domain for some reason in just his second issue; when at the same time there IS an on-going Age of Apocalypse tie-in.

And I never followed the X-Books as much after the late 90s, so it's even more confusing for me I guess. But out of all the other characters, the mutants are the ones with the most extreme number of duplicates and different versions running around. Wouldn't be a big problem if they were more distinct but I honestly cannot tell the difference between one version to the next in many of the books.

Since I've never been a fan of Frank Quitely's art this is... not attractive, but not a lot worse than the original IMHO.

See, I got no beef with this. Maybe not as out-loud crazy as the source material, but still, it's my jam.

I missed these crazy kids.

Everyone is either lumpy, decaying, or melting judging by this artwork. Also, Beast looks like panther painted blue and given a bad wig.

That means it captures the feel of the Morrison/Quitely run perfectly.

Not quite. For example, I didn't feel that Emma's costume was in danger of flying apart if she took in a breath at the wrong moment or attempted to turn at the waist.

I really liked this issue, it's one of the few Battleworld minis that I'm buying (not that the others are bad, there's just a lot of them). I'm a big fan of the creative team, Chris Burnham's recent writing has been really impressive, and Ramon Villalobos is one of my favorite rising artists. As with many of these Battleworld minis, the awesome creative team manages to make Marvel's All-New All-Different relaunch look even more disappointingly safe and predictable in comparison.

Also, if anyone is feeling annoyed with the treatment of the old X-Men, keep in mind that the scenes above are settings things up, and also Magneto's X-Men are supposed to be jerks. In the latter half of the issue, not shown here, the old X-Men take charge of the story and seem set to kick ass and take names.
