"I feel like I spent an hour swimming in raw sewage." - Linkara

"I’m speechless. This is the single thing in this entire series that can still render me such, even on this, my third re-read of the book. Not that we’re going to run low on insanity from here on out. It’s just that this is easily the nadir." - Fletcher “Syrg” Arnett

Writer: Bill Jemas
Artist: Mark Bright
Inker: Paul Neary
Colorist: Transparency Digital

Because there are no good quotes from the creators, above are quotes from people who read this comic!

Welcome back to Marville Mondays. Let's move onto the second issue, which is the also the last of the parody.

Again, here's quick insider's guide to Marville.

With that out of the way, let's proceed, looking at random pieces from the comic.

I am convinced that the only reason that hot chicks are on almost every cover is to get a boost in sales by making it look like smut.

Speaking of that, I love that petty little dig at Peter David, the guy who Jemas had made the bet with, showing him as a literal homeless person because it was so obvious that Bill Jemas was gonna win that bet.

I love to think that Jemas had already written this issue and submitted it to print before he checked out the sales from the previous month and realized "welp, lost that bet didn't I?"

And of course he kept the book going its entire run anyways because he's the boss and he can do what he wants and "I'M NOT STUPID YOU'RE STUPID NYAH NYAH NYAH!"

That would also explain why from issue 3 and on we go from "comic industry parody" to " pseudo philosophical garbage featuring worse science than an episode of Star Trek Voyager."

That summary page. Wow. Did Peter David piss in Jemas' cornflakes or something?

If "MARVILLE" had been part of a new parody series (like NOT BRAND ECCH and WHAT THE) it would have worked to a degree. But MARVILLE was not a parody series completely.

It's so bad it even makes me weep for the cockroaches who will replace humanity.

No real causative reason, it's just that bad.

They had a bet going on at the time to see whose comic could sell more, David's run on Captain Marvel, or Jemas' Marville.

Jemas, not possessing anything resembling a sense of actual reality, assumed that his comic about Ted Turner's time traveling son from a thousand years in the future was going to win, so he decided to celebrate in the second issue by depicting his rival as a homeless man begging for money from his comics main characters. Because that's not petty or mean spirited in the slightest is it?

Not really, because even discounting issue 3 onward (where shit just got WEIRD), Marville was too mean spirited and unfunny to be enjoyable.

That I find more disreputable about Big Two comics more than any actual storyline -- some of the people who were writing the goddamn things before the 2010s and a system that let them get anywhere near enough to actually write.

I don't know if I've ever agreed with Linkara more (and that's saying something because I agree with him a lot).

Jeez, "pretentious" does not even BEGIN to describe this drivel.

This series makes me weep for Marvel comics.

Out of all the thousands and thousands of alternate realities that got destroyed, this is one of the few they felt worth preserving in Battleworld? This is almost as bloody bad as Mark Millar & Terry Dodson’s "Trouble" miniseries.

The "Marville" area of Battleworld is where Skottie Young's Giant-Size Little Marvel series takes place. It has nothing to do with this series.

David got upset about a price hike to Captain Marvel, which he was writing at the time, and wrote an open letter to Marvel complaining about it.

In response, Jemas made the bet to reboot Captain Marvel and pit it against Marville, with the loser getting canceled.

Captain Marvel won hands down, but both series got canceled.

I like to think they just tried to ignore all this shit going on and just did their jobs, since this was pretty obviously between Jemas and David.

Hell, for all I know David just tried to ignore all this shit and just did his job, since the only side of this I've seen is Marville (And I obviously wont see any of the Captain Marvel run here since Peter David stuff is verboten.)

Given some of the things I've read and enjoyed, either ironically or not (I made it through 6 issues of ASBAR and 5 of Ultimates 3), the fact that this is so bad I feel tainted having read it is saying something....

I think that the real contest was with Chuck Austen, to see how thoroughly they could guarantee that their comics careers would be dead, buried, and put beyond the skill of the most dogged necromancers to resurrect. I think they both won. Lost. Whatever.

The nicest thing I can say about this drek is that its author fondly remembers MAD Magazine's parodies and tried to capture that sense of satire.

Unfortunately, the distance by which he missed the actual execution of those can only be described on astronomical scales.

Towards the end, I can kinda see an argument for CM having said what it wanted to say... but really, it blew this away in every way, and if it lasted ten times as long and PD phoned in every issue while half-asleep it'd still be superior.
