I feel like whenever writers let silent characters like Black Bolt or Groot talk it does nothing to improve them. I kinda think Cassandra Cain was more interesting when she was mute too (especially since she was so strong visually back then). Would R2-D2 be more or less endearing if we knew what he was saying

That last panel is pretty cute though

Edit: also I thought that Groot's catchphrase wasn't a language barrier, but that "I am Groot" was all the English that plant matter could wrap its head around

I loved when he met The Inhumans, specifically Black Bolt's brother, Maximus. I can't recall the scene exactly, but it was something like:

"I am Groot."
"Pardon? What was that, your majesty?"
"I am Groot."
"My liege, that's brilliant! If we did *technobabble* we could *technobabble* and *technobabble*."
"I am Groot."
"Slow down, let me write this all down."

And as they're walking away, all the other characters wonder if he can actually understand Groot or if Maximus is just that insane. And even better, we NEVER find out the answer.

Yeah, the good old joke of "one character says something short and incomprehensible and another character understands them perfectly and implies they said something deep and intellectual."

It's very old, yet managed to avoid dead horse status by being actually funny :)

This was a nice scene, but since Rocket also usually understands Groot him being one of the straight men was kinda weird choice.

For what it's worth, I ended up liking Transformers Prime's Bumblebee a LOT more once he began talking...

The fact that he was voiced by Batman helps, but still.

Groot really does go through some radical redesigns, doesn't he. I'm not sure what to make of that... or the way he seems to have regressed from the imposing monarchal figure we see in the earlier appearances, to the almost child-like version of the current series.

I suspect that "dying" and regrowing so many times has had a detrimental effect, like we're seeing, not just Groot reborn each time, but more of a sapling or seed of Groot who has all the previous memories, but less -actual- experience and maturity. That would account for the change in size and appearance, as well as general temperament, while still giving us the original Monarch of Planet X.

I like the Grootified heroes, especially Grootclops.
