Same reason Luke couldn't in canon -- Palpatine is way too powerful and too sneaky. Once he starts throwing lightning, it's over -- unless you are the most powerful Jedi in history AND part robot.
Maybe, though things are clearly different here. Leia not abandoning her training and her encounter with Palpatine undoubtedly being under different circumstances.
Luke's abandoning his training is meaningless. The next time he meets Yoda, the master admits that he doesn't need any more training -- and despite gaining the wisdom to refuse the temptation that Palpatine offers him, the Emperor effortlessly floors him. What's going to save Leia?
Kinda feel like it takes something away from Leia for Han & Chewie to get the killshot on Vader.
I don't mind them showing up, turning the tides in her favor, and then letting her duel her father 1 on 1, that would be cool. Strong doesn't mean she should do it by herself, but to have her out maneuvered and then have Han just show up and plop Vader in the head seems wrong.
Yeah, the "Leia is saved by Han and Chewie who possibly doom the Rebel Alliance in the process" is not the best ending, especially when the series had started so strongly.
But then I have the exact same problem with Order 66, where NONE of the highly trained Jedi Masters who had been seen dealing almost casually with armies of armed enemies, were able to deal with the Clone Troopers.
The Jedi were shot in the back by the people (some while also getting shot at by the droids) they fought with for the past 3 years. I believe it's also said the war had tainted the Force making it harder to perceive dangers and they had difficulty detecting the Clones' betrayal because they didn't carry any hatred or malice for the Jedi.
Kind of, maybe, but at the same time, Darth is usually shown being able to deflect lasers with ease.
I figure Leia's triumph was in disarming Vader (literally), something even Luke wasn't able to do, leaving him open to such an attack in the first place. Everyone got to play their part.
