Marvel has announced that its current event series Secret Wars is getting bigger -- by one issue in fact. Originally solicited as an eight issue series ending in October, the publisher has now announced Secret Wars #9 to come in December.

“Apparently, Secret Wars is even bigger than we thought it was,” said Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso. “To help Jonathan and Esad conclude this epic event as big and bombastically as it started, we are adding an extra issue. That means one more month of the suspense, action and game-changing storytelling that fans and retailers have been clamoring for since the final incursion started.”

This new issue will be by the series' regular team of Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic, with Marvel saying the issue was needed to finish their story "'as intended."

The Secret Wars series has experienced some delays since it launched, with the upcoming Secret Wars #6 pushed from an early August release date to September 16. The subsequent issues haven't been announced as being delayed, but given #7 is solicited for September 23 and #8 for October 7 with the same creative team of Hickman and Ribic, those too could be delayed.

“This extra issue will not affect any of the new launches as part of All-New, All-Different Marvel,“ said David Gabriel, Marvel SVP Sales & Marketing. “But there might be a surprise or two left over from Battleworld you weren’t expecting. In fact, like the original Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars, some of those puzzle pieces will hit the Marvel Universe before the event concludes. But if you want to see how they all fittogether, you don’t want to miss these last few issues."

The cover to Secret Wars #9 features the same Alex Ross artwork as solicited for Secret Wars #8, although in the Marvel has changed covers for the series from what was originally solicited.

It took you until halfway through the event to realise this? I am not impressed.

Not surprising, a lot of the tie-ins were also majorly delayed (House of M #4 was slated for September, and we only got it's #1 just last weekish).

But we're going to have a weird parallel Secret Wars with the post-Secret Wars relaunch? Or are all the new #1s pushed into December or even next year at this rate?

it may be pushed for next year. Maybe they are going to call 2016 the year of the new marvel?

I suppose it ties into the original, where it took 12 months for Secret Wars to finish, but the affectes were felt 11 months previously in the main titles... I think.

You just have to love it when they realize, mid-series, that they can't get the story done in the space originally planned.

Maybe if certain previous issues hadn't been so decompressed...

I don't know, #5 was almost all exposition but I was grateful to finally find out what the hell Doom and the Molecule Man did to get rid of the Beyonders.

Even if I shared that gratitude (I don't), that information seems pretty inconsequential to the plot and pretty easy to figure out - the point is what's happening now, not that they're gone, and that Doom did something to get rid of them because Doom is Awesome and his Schlanger is a mighty colossus.

And even if it were super-super-important, that still doesn't justify turning an entire issue into two conversations and two speeches, where at the end of which everyone is still exactly where they were.

well, I think they are going to keep the Secret Wars going until we all finally give in and say "ok, this is a good idea"

The best they'll get from me is "ok, this is more interesting than the multi-year railroading snorefest that led up to it."
