Godzilla in Hell #1

And then Godzilla falls through a pit and goes into the next level of Hell, presumably.

First issue doesn't actually say why this is happening, but the next issue preview sets it up that he's fighting demonic versions of all his past enemies. This first monster's Ohga, I think, 'The Thing' style alien monster that can mimic/absorb genetic material like Godzilla's. He killed it in the movie in a very similar fashion, blowing it up from the inside.

Next issue is demon Rodan, and the interior artist is different, I think it looks better. 

So yeah, Dante's Inferno meets kaiju. Gotta say it's pretty original. One thing I didn't add. The first thing Godzilla saw were demonic nuclear power plants, and he approached them like he was hungry. But they were full of tentacle demon offal or something. So maybe we're on the Circle of Gluttony or something, which maybe explains Ohga as well (cause it's thing in the movie as to try to eat Godzilla with its giant mouth).

Actually, those nuclear towers were likely analagous to fleshpots, and the swarm of smushed-together people are likely lovers whose unions were not sanctioned by God. You'll notice when Godzilla lands (not in these scans) the clouts of dust left when he smashes the "abandon hope" sign forms the shape of the word "LUST".

Perhaps Ohga represents that theme through its shape-shifting, and its engulfing attack.

This series is pretty damn awesome although the stlye changes between issue to issue can get a bit jarring (issue 2 for example uses a lot of prose and landscape art).

Is in a way similar to Batman Black & White I guess.

I completely disagree regarding the change in artists, I'm afraid. Stokoe is just one of those artists I could happily have drawing Godzilla forever; the only thing that bugged me about Half Century War was the lack of Destroyah for a send off.

Godzilla is so cute. Why is the poor baby in Hell though? It seems so...drastic. But, hey, I can dig it. Neat art, and different concept. Different isn't bad.

A little freaked out by the G-Virus Godzilla in Hell fight though. Very unnerving.

Strangely enough, I've never considered the possibility of Gojira 'dying', even with the skeleton in the 2014 movie and the original films where he was an antagonist.

The art is absolutely fantastic, though. Wasn't this artist on another Godzilla comic before? Been meaning to track it down.

James Stokoe also did Godzilla: The Half Century War, which follows one man's 50 year vendetta against the King of Monsters. It's crazy good, to the point where despite having the singles, I'm considering getting the deluxe version.

Right! That's where I'd seen it before. Been meaning to track that series down. I'm not really a Godzilla fan but the art was just too good.

Wasn't there once a movie planned where Godzilla was to fight Satan? It was from the guy who did Godzilla vs. the Smog monster, but that movie bombed so the Godzilla vs. Satan movie never happened.

Also I love Godzilla's shocked expression when Not Godzilla mutates.

Wait, if this is Dante's inferno with Godzilla, does this mean that King Ghidorah is gonna be Satan? I mean they both have three heads.

I've wondered what a James Stokoe rendition of that story about the indwelt NES Godzilla cartridge would look like.
