I've seen a lot of Authority posted here (and on the earlier incarnations of Scans_Daily), but never really any of the Stormwatch stuff that preceded it. Is that any good? (I'm assuming the Jim Lee stuff is skippable, but surely the Alan Moore and Warren Ellis bits must be worth a look?)

I came on board with the Warren Ellis revamp, and it really did a number on younger me... I thought it was pretty awesome at the time.
Pre-Ellis Stormwatch was, well, for the most part very Image. You could quite honestly skip most of it and not miss a thing. Ellis laid just about all of the beats for Authority, having created everyone except Swift during his run, and even she got a makeover.

Alan Moore never did Stormwatch, he did WildC.A.T.s and that's definitely worth a look.

This. Ellis' Stormwatch is basically a prelude to his Authority stories, and it arguably works a lot better in some ways - a lot of the stories work like his Moon Knight run, so they're ostensibly done-in-one stories but are chain-linked together.

And Moore's Wildcats is great, the first time the book took a real step-up and the writing became fantastic; I like it more than any of Casey's runs, personally, which received much more acclaim.

Most of Moore's WildCATs is great, but there's one portion in the middle that should be passed around for the whole comics biz to see as a cautionary illustration of how much a forced crossover can totally derail a title. Everything's building so nicely up to that point, then thud -- including one character literally getting his personality re-written. It's a shame. Without those 2-3 crossover issues, the run probably could have gone down as one long, extremely solidly-constructed story, a graphic novel for the shelves. Instead, it's almost that, but it has this garish hiccup in the middle that it never quite completely recovers from.

God, what was the crossover's name? Fire from Heaven, or something? Moore's issues of that might be some of the blandest, empty comics he's ever written.

Yes, "Fire from Heaven" it was. Issues 29 & 30 of WildC.A.T.S. were parts 7 & 13 of the crossover.

I had wondered about that, yeah - it's included in the Complete Wildcats tpb for some godforsaken reason and it just derails literally everything for about three issues - and it makes NO sense because the other issues of the run aren't included, meaning I have no idea who that iteration of Kaizen Gamorra is, or why these heroes are bellowing 'SHOOT FOR THE MOON' and then it's back to Moore's real story in the next issue.

But.. Yeah. TAU and Ladytron alone are reason enough that his run should be respected.

That's the thing: You *can't* not include those issues because some pretty important developments happen in them. That's what makes the whole thing so frustrating. If it was the kind of crossover you could just skip over, it wouldn't be so bad. But in this thing, Spartan gets a whole new personality, Voodoo leaves the team, etc. Plus, IIRC, the issues afterward sort of continue from where those issues left off.

*Very* good, the Ellis Stormwatch was in a lot of ways deeper than the Ellis Authority, and directly lead to it.

Great moment, the return of a Jenny in charge really helped out :)

Also, in terms of female cast, Swift often didn't get much to do, and the Engineer was generally treated as the most junior of the team, so combined with them being the minority, things felt a bit testosterone heavy. This added some balance.

Yeah, if they'd actually done more with Jenny and the new addition to the team at the end of the book - no spoilers for those who haven't read it - then the team would have actually had more female members than male, I think. Or at least even amounts.

I think that, ironically, despite this being a nice reboot point, it was one of the last Authority stories I read.

You know, for the Spirit of the 21st Century, smoking really does seem like a rather outmoded and obnoxious affectation.
