THE BEST OF SUPERGIRL, PART 2: SUPERGIRL AND...LOBO???

Continuing a look at the best Supergirl stories, since the TV show seems to be a success, and DC cluelessly has no Supergirl book currently...

When last we saw Supergirl, she was stuck on the planet Ventura, the interstellar Las Vegas, unsure of where even Earth was from there, much less Rann, where she was hoping to meet Green Lantern again, as they searched for the ultra-dangerous Book of Destiny.

Desperate times requires desperate measures.

7 pages out of 21 from Mark Waid and George Perez' BRAVE AND BOLD mini-sereis, issue 4, August 2007, as a girl on her own gets caught up with bad company..

At least this is the real Lobo, not the prettied up nu52 version.

Lobo, flushed with victory, says he'll buy drinks for everybody. Supergirl objects, says he promised that if she arm-wrestled him, they'd leave.

Lobo: "Keep your shirt on--wait, what am I sayin'? Flash me an' we'll talk!"

Instead, she clobbers the first alien who tries to take advantage of Lobo's offer. She and the disgruntled Lobo step outside the bar, and...

I love the "microscopic vision" line.

Then they run into Dream of the Endless, who is oddly stammering, bereft of his Book of Destiny, and having discovered four men were not in the Book. (Spoiler alert: The Challengers of the Unknown, who "cheated" death, are the four men.) The Venturans, who worship Chance and Destiny, took advantage of it and stole the book, leading to the previous entry.

Lobo, bored, comes back on his space bike/hawg.

Supergirl finally snaps:

Supergirl asks Destiny, as they leave, if anyone can use the book and see the future, and he answers, "If that is their true desire..."

Awwww...

But still, they don't exactly kiss and make up:

Kara starts looking for GL, x-raying the cities, hoping "all the ugly people have lead underwear", only to be shot out at the Rannian military, who thought she was a Thanagarian with "red wings".

A really fun book. Cheerleaderish Supergirl against the original, grungey Lobo, made for quite the contrast.

I'll do some more BEST OF SUPERGIRL in a few days.

The jacket is a good look for her.

ISN'T it though? Maybe she should stop trying to look like a cheerleader and more like a biker chick. It was, at least, a good change of pace.

Mark Waid REALLY knew how to write a good Kara. I believe Grant Morrison said in interviews that his inspiration for using a heroic Supergirl (the symbol of what feminism was supposed to mean in the DCU or some such, according to Morrison, whatever that means) in Final Crisis vs an Evil Corrupted Mary Marvel was based on how Waid wrote Kara in a single issue of B&B (the one with Hal Jordan). Of course Waid's Supergirl was almost exactly the opposite of the obnoxious and violent Supergirl that was appearing in her own title at the time.

I wouldn't say opposite, I have no problem believing they're the same person... she's just not having one of her episodes relating to her shifting background.

She's still aggressively sexual in regards to Hal, much as she was with Nightwing, and Boomer... She's really dealing with a lot of the same issues in this story that she deals with in her own book it's just way better handled.

Didn't Lobo purposely cause the genocide of his race? Weird to see him showing sympathy over someone else being a last survivor.

Anyway, this run of the Brave and the Bold was really good stuff.
