Vader flies rings around him (literally) flying his TIE fighter in ways that no one had ever seen before, turns that should have had it explode and dives that should have been suicidal.
Later on, one of the mechanics on the ship Vader was using notes that the usual automated targetting and piloting systems had never been turned on, and everything he had managed he had managed manually.
That's the sort of legend that will grow VERY quickly.
