"The Basilica in Rome"? Which one? St. John Lateran? Mary Major? Paul Outside the Walls? Those are just the "major" basilicas (there are more minor ones) in Rome, besides St. Peter's . Even real life reporters who don't know religion know the actual name of what "the world's largest church" is. This is lazy writing. And its been done a zillion times. Heck, in "2012" Roland Emmerich made a special point to blow up the Vatican. .Although technically speaking religions are a lot more than buildings (or they should be) so I'm not sure exactly how Zeus's plan is supposed to work. Does he any idea of the actual theologies behind the religions he is banning?

"The Basilica in Rome" would usual be taken to refer to St Peter's unless otherwise stated. (Much like saying "St Paul's in London" will be taken to mean "St Paul's Cathedral" not any of the other, smaller churches called St Paul's dotted around the city.

As for your second point, it's possible that the reporter might be referring to a more broad definition of the word "Church" and means the Vatican (and thus an immediate and significant part of the Catholic hierarchy and infrastructure) is being compeletly destroyed, and the Basilica is the most televisual devastation.

Plus I would think Zeus does know what he's doing, make it clear that any place of worship on the planet can be completely levelled at his whim, and see what it does to attendance rates. Whether his plan would work is another matter, but Zeus has never been what you might call a long term planner; bonk or smite and RIGHT NOW seems to summarise most of his actions.
