Seeing this made me seek out the synopsis for this arc, and I can honestly say that this sounds to be among the stupidest things I can ever recall seeing published.

I read it, at the time. No idea what it was going to be. I loved Constantine, was continuing off the previous run, had heard good things about this writer in the past. Hoooooly fuck was this terrible. And not even in an interesting way, just... kind of grinding your face in griminess with no point to make or real story to tell about it, except how grimy it is. Blegh. It did have some decent art, though - some impressively threatening grins from Constantine, threaded throughout, but, ugh, the writing was just.... well. It was as you said.
