I seem to recall Krypton had an entire "waterfall" made of molten gold.

No, they had a waterfall made out of fire. It was a volcano that erupted gold.

As I've noted in my Kryptonian Bestiary tumblr account, if gold was the most common element on the surface of Krypton, and the core was uranium (plus some other elements that kept it from exploding immediately) no WONDER it had such a high gravity.

This makes me actually feel kind of intersted in that "Krypton" prequel TV series that might be on SyFy (it doesn't make me feel any better about SciFi channel's silly rebranding though)
