This is the first X-men mag I've enjoyed since forever.

I feel like telling the new guy to assassinate Xavier is the Brotherhood's version of hazing.

Also, how long has it been since we've actually had a major version of the Brotherhood of Mutants/Evil Mutants? I know we had the Sisterhood a couple of years ago, but I think that was fairly shortlived.

Well the X-men of the future group that had Older Molly Hayes, Raze, Charles Xavier junior, Older future Jean Grey, Deadpool, Ice-beast, and Beast were that group in Bendis's run.

They only really showed up in Battle for the Atom, right? Seems like it's been a while since we've seen a long term Brotherhood rather than storyline specific teams.

They appeared later in All New X-men or Uncanny X-men in which Bendis retconned in that every one was mind controlled by Xavier Junior, apart from Raze. Also that Xavier Junior was the son, not grandson of Xavier. His mom was made into Mystique, making Raze and him brothers.

It's been a long time, too long. I think that Decimation sort of reduced the number of mutants to the point that folding them all into one homogeous X-like mass was the only way for them to have enough numbers to survive.

Certainly I'd have thought there might be enough pissed off humans who suddenly became mutants in the... whatever the event that restarted mutants was, that a new bunch might have decided to go militant and reclaim the name.

I'm sure there is a more experienced assassin hidden amongst the teaching staff though; one who will take over when the inexperienced guy has failed four or five times. I'm sure that is how this sort of thing goes.

Eh, I found the "it's just a as bad to be middle class and white as it is to stick out" shtick as annoying here as when Dan Slott used it for that horrific "Alpha" character. Still, at least this guy is not as obnoxious as Alpha.

Be fair to the character- a lot of that came from his Humberto Ramos renditions.

I'd say that's a misreading. When this guy laments his ordinariness, it's consistently in terms of his bland interests and his lack of talent. It's never been about his social stratus or ethnicity, nor has he envied others for theirs.

It's interesting here to see the writer's take on what we might call the idealized form of the spinoff X-Teams in his idealized, timeless X-Men universe. X-Force as the stabby Cable-led violent team, New Mutants as grown-up secondary team, X-Factor as the government version, and Alpha Flight as um... yeah, Alpha Flight gets no respect.

Who's the girl with Max in the last page? Anyone we should know, or a random newbie who's obviously there as a possible love interest/best friend?

I believe that is a random newbie X-woman love interest who was introduced in the first issue. Rags. Has the power to decay things or something. Has a brother who goes by riches and can make gold

HIm appearing with the New Mutants does make me wonder how he had Cypher would get on, with Doug trying to be the "Glass half full" approach and this kid being the "Glass half empty"

I like a bit of meta as much as the next person, but a book being entirely meta doesn't appeal.

Yeah, it's like a book full of the same punchline. It's not that it can't work, but if you're not Ambush Bug, Deadpool, or Byrne-era She-Hulk, it'll probably get old real quick.

I kinda want this kid to meet Naegi Makoto, who basically made his amazing blandness into its own fucking superpower when surrounded by 'genius adolescent' Japanese pop culture tropes.

I feel Naegi and this kid would have an amazing, if incredibly dull, time together.
