Ta-Nehisi Coates: No you can’t. Also there’s an element where people get into comic books because they want to live through the character. They want to see Wolverine do a bunch of cool shit. That will always be an element. You have to have some of that but that’s not what grabs me.

As a writer, I can’t stay there because of that. Once I saw Hickman hitting on this whole notion of what would Kings actually do, as he said, “what giants do,” it was like oh. OK. It’s not enough to just be a badass and everybody does what you say.

It’s not enough for Dora Milaje to say, “Oh we love you.” And that’s just it. Obviously he had Nakia and that sort of thing with Malice and all of that. But I’m talking about something even deeper when people actually have deep seated beefs with you. That are real beefs that people should have.

Weren't Wakandan vibranium stores depleted, and the processed vibranium made worthless by Panther after Doom stole it? So, what exactly are they mining?

That was before the multiverse was destroyed and remade a couple of times.

They've kept a few things somewhat cagey, but Ultimates in particular has discussed the story beat that some things about the multiverse genuinely appear to have changed. It's possible Coates and/or Marvel are taking advantage of this to undo the destruction of the world's Vibranium, or that it was quietly undone during the eight-month time skip in a way that has yet to be revealed.

Or everyone is treating it as a get-out-of-continuity card while still insisting that this is the same universe and not completely new one with new characters who we have no emotional investment with. The basic have your cake and eat it too scenario.

Considering what a strong showing T'Challa had in a certain recent movie, this is absolutely the right time for Coates to come in and revamp the title. In fact, you could say it's getting a new...COATES...of paint...eh? Eh?
