Ultimate Comics The Ultimates is such a hilarious title to me. It reminds me of 'Malkovitch Malkovitch Malkovitch'.

Who in their right mind would sign off on a title like that? Okay, you want to let people know that this is a mulligan for the Ultimate universe, sure. Why not call it New Ultimates?

I think you missed an Ultimates run though. One that came before Ultimatum even. I remember the art being wicked, but the story being weird.

Ultimates 3. Joe Mad art, which is typically pretty solid in a 90's way, but it has an incredibly stupid Jeph Loeb story. Not really worth acknowledging.

Remember back when Jonathan Hickman was one of the GOOD Marvel writers?

Eh.
Even back in those days he still had all the habits that made his Avengers / New Avengers runs such a sour note.
Particularly the habit of putting a lot of effort into worldbuilding, introducing new characters and concepts, and then murdering the everlasting shit out of them before the ink's dry.
Look at Ultimate Thor. All that work establishing Asgard, and Loki, the Warriors Three, and he murders them. Then Thor brings them back.
Then he murders them all AGAIN in this series.

Well, some still praised him for his Avengers/Secret Wars work, despite being overly long, butchering the Avengers to suit his needs, and for Secret Wars reaaaaally being a better capstone to his Fantastic Four work more than anything else.

Oh yeah, back when he wasn't committing the cardinal sin of imposing his writing quirks on characters and concepts valued higher in terms of some metric of popularity.

It's really so curious how the flaws of shared universe writers get more obvious as they get to work on characters more people have an investment in.

Having recently read an issue of his Fantastic Four run, I'm completely shocked by how good it is. So much humanity and character in it... where the hell did that Hickman go?!
