This is so much fun, I will swallow my disappointment that my pet theory now looks highly unlikely. Up to this point, Bruce and Carrie were never acting independently at the same time (and she was wearing a Batman costume at first), so I've believed throughout that Bruce Wayne was already dead and we were just seeing him as Carrie's imaginary companion and/or imagined self.
Events in this issue make that interpretation pretty shaky. And this story still isn't anywhere near the intellectual richness of the original DKR. Aaaand Miller's problematic later ideas still peek out here and there. But it just about recaptures the thrilling energy of that story, and especially after DK2, that is no small accomplishment.
That last image is so great. As dark as Azzarello's writing is, he does actually have a really optimistic streak in him which helps those heroes truly seem like bright spots in his stories.
You know I picked up the Last Crusade one-shot based on the pages I saw on here and general positive buzz, and it feels like night and day compared to this. Not that I'm calling this bad, I'm only seeing a few pages, but Last Crusade felt so much more human and thoughtful, whereas this feels more like a cartoon. Not that cartoons are bad of course, but they're just such vastly different comics.
