New Invinicble Iron Man Series
Jul. 6th, 2016 08:34 amHey guys! I bet you all want a new Iron Man series that doesn't feature Tony Stark! Don't worry, Marvel has you covered!
CBR brings us the following information today:

The new series will see Stark step down as Iron Man and Riri Williams take his place. But just because we know that Stark will pass on the Iron mantle after "Civil War II" doesn't mean we know the event's ending. "I can tell you just because we’re hearing what we’re saying doesn’t know you mean how 'Civil War II' ends," said Bendis to Time. "We’re not telling you the end, at all."
Originally introduced in full in "Invincible Iron Man" #9, Riri Williams is a 15-year-old M.I.T. student who took it upon herself to build her own set of Iron Man armor. Riri's role in the post-"Civil War II" Marvel landscape looks to be a big one; in addition to starring in "Invincible Iron Man," she also stood at the front of one of the groups in the Marvel NOW! teaser image.
So... does anyone care?

Date: 2016-07-06 02:09 pm (UTC)Does anyone *really* think that 'long term' Tony Stark won't be Iron Man again one day? No, life's not that short.
But at the end of the day Jane is still Thor, Sam is still Cap, and Marvel is still pushing to add diversified legacies to their line at a pace that is frankly astounding. Kudos to them to trying to shake things up with their publishing line.
The cynic in me wonders if this 21st Century viewpoint isn't at least partially fueled by an idea that the public may not buy "James Bond" style casting for Marvel heroes... but if the books build in legacy style replacements for them before the actors age out of the roles, that could extend the franchises for years.
But conspiracy theories aside, Marvel Publishing is doing a good thing, and we should applaud them for trying.

Date: 2016-07-06 02:15 pm (UTC)Not that thats undoable or a bad thing. But a huge part of Kamala's success aside from the writing is that she has her own distinct origin story where she becomes a hero of her own accord. With her own bedrock of supporting characters and her own geographical section of the Marvel Universe. Where with here it looks like theyre having this character be a direct protege. And Im skeptical of how possible it is for a character created right in a A-listers shadow to break out of it.
I mean, the idea of this character indepedently making her own armor and going out heroing with it is the way to go imo. Not having her basically be a supporting character for Tony Stark.

Iron Man is now quite literally Fe Male

Date: 2016-07-06 08:02 pm (UTC)No clue why she's not Iron Woman, though. Unless the idea is that the public won't know it's someone new in the armor. What's the current status of Tony's secret identity?

Date: 2016-07-06 08:45 pm (UTC)Standard industry gripes over the lack of behind the scenes diversity and new talent aside, I'm ambivalent about this. Tony Stark is a bit of a tough sell as a solo protagonist, so replacing him makes sense (Ewing and Davis' Ultron Forever mini left me quite fond of Rhodey as Iron Man) especially since it rounds out the new Cap, Thor, Iron Man trinity. On the other hand, I'm not a big fan of teen heroes, even when I myself was a teen I found them hard to relate to.
