Especially tough when it's Fisk. The only take I've really found compelling was Bendis/Brubaker and then the version from the TV show, which I found pretty awesome for a 'Year One'-style take on the character.
I agree. I liked Miller's take some of the time (especially the Vanessa parts) but I found Brubaker's way too emotional. Same for the first season version on the TV show, but then it turned out to be his Year One, as you say, and in the second season he was absolute perfection.
I really liked him across the first season because you have to give us some reason to understand the bad guy; in the comics, Fisk has had years to do that and the weight and effect of his criminal empire and the like informs the character as he is now. But for the show, giving him the already established empire, having his own people undermine him because of Vanessa and then eventually having him come out stronger because of that? Great stuff.
