I don't think I'm a fan of them turning General Kane into a discount General Lane. But then, I wasn't too attached to the character before, so let's see where this goes.
Tentative on this - they've villainized/antagonist-ized a core member of Batwoman's already meager core supporting cast and retcon-hurt her origin ("This is what I've been training you for. From the beginning.")
Assuming karmic table-turning, this'd be like if Kate had to stop a rogue Alfred's decades-long plan for a militarized Batman Inc., all so Bruce could finally quit. It's a bit too core-affecting, is the challenge here. Still, I've always liked "Batman underdogged" stories, plus the team dynamic seems entertaining, so judgment pending further issues, I guess.
To some extent thats the advantage of having a character like Batman on a team book, you don't have to worry about a lot of the build up necessary for this kind of plot. It works well enough to introduce and demonstrate the abilities of the team in his absence.
Besides it's entirely possible that Batman decided getting captured was a thing he could work with (wouldn't be the first time) and he's less helpless than it seems.
With the Pre-Crisis Superman around, wouldn't Bats technically be able to escape pretty much any confinement by yelling for Clark and waiting for the sound to reach him?
I continue to be baffled by the pace of pushing the characters in the story. This is the third issue and Batman is already incapacitated by a superior force, because why not, and the team has to go and save him. It just continues to feel really clumsy narratively to me, which worries me.
I honestly like Batwoman, even if Tynion seems to be making her more like a knock-off Batman here, but I've rarely seen this level aggresive elevating work in the long term.
Some of this sounds like the "original ending" for DARK KNIGHT RETURNS which was in some of the Trade Paperbacks. Bruce Wayne is in a hospital bed and a government agent comes to him. "Mr. Wayne, with your intelligence and ingenuity, you would be a great boon for your country and the world. Want to run the CIA?"
General Eiling of Captain Atom fame, Sam Lane (who started his post COIE existence as a retired NCO, not a general) and now Jacob Kane. DC really is obsessed with the "General Ripper" trope, even if ruins previously "good" characters (they also did this to Lucy Lane pre-reboot by suddenly turning her from a married mother/former stewardess to a dutiful single officer in the army assigned to kill Kryptonians). I don't get it.
Narrator: Deep within an abandoned military base in New Jersey lies the most ruthless, bigoted and irrational military might of power: General Kane the deceiver, General Maverick abuser of power, General Eiling Monster of the week, General "I hate my son in law" Lane, Maria Hill need we say more. Who leads these irrational trigger happy powers movers, non other than General Thunderbolt Ross!!!
