How is it that the Kingpin manages to be more likeable and rootable than any of the heroes?

For me, it's because he's usually pretty self aware. Depending on the writer anyway.

Simple Goals: gain Money and Power but to share it with loved ones rather than for it's own sake.

He's not fighting other villains in a big event?

Oh, come on, villain fights are delicious! Lex Luthor and Grodd sniping at each other were some of the highlights of JLU's last season.

I'm reading this as a sociopath who is very deliberately being as likeable and rootable as possible. The "Hahaha! That Vulture, amiright" part almost gives away the con – but, like the best of targets, it's clear that Janus wants to believe.

I don't think Kingpin is a sociopath, I think he's capable of having genuine human relationships as seen when he tried to start a new life in Spain. Although he is probably being manipulative here.

Pretty much. There's a reason why Kingpin and Bullseye always get along. They are cut from the same cloth. Though Kingpin might be better at hiding it.

Nothing really new, the Kingpin's always been the guy with the best arguments in the room. Whenever someone tries to argue with him it usually comes down to ad hominem attacks about his weight or just stuff like "You're wrong!"

I just love the panel of Fisk and his buddy chilling on the couch watching movies with a bucket of popcorn.

This will be interesting on Kingpin's resume, hanging out with a Celestial.

How does this tie-in to Civil War II? I mean, is that guy an inhuman or something? I'm just trying to link it to the core story.

He's an Inhuman who for some reason has made it impossible for Fisk's activities to be identified by Ulysses which allows him to act with impunity while everyone else gets arrested.

If i were to justify this. If indeed Tony was right about Ulysses powers absorbind all sorts of energy/data/whatever. then maybe his inhuman power is to create some sort of "vacuum" or something that nullifies whatever Ulysses absorbs?

The cover seems weird to me. I always pictured Kingpin as having a really big barrel chest build like a power lifter, and not the unhealthy looking drooping gut we see there.

I think my favourite visual interpretation of him remains with Eduardo Risso's version in the single-issue story "Secerance Package" in 'Spider-Man's Tangled Web', where he appears to be three times the size of an ordinary man and needs a pen to dial his cellphone...but still wears a classy several-piece suit and has said phone attached to his waistcoat by a chain fob.

I don't know, I feel that going hog wild with how big and strong he is takes away from his appeal from being this intimidating ubermensch who is yet still a normal man.

The artwork is on and off. There's a panel you missed out where Tombstone, whose only visual distinction is that he's a 7-foot albino of African-American heritage, looks like he's been crafted out of papier mache.

Jimmy Cagney movies...yeah! :)

Kingpin's a little contradictory here. He laments the days when the families took care of the neighborhoods and you followed certain rules, and now all is chaos. Then in the chess match he declares that the winner will be the man who doesn't follow the rules.

I like him, anyway, as far as villains go. Any guy who can chill with a movie and popcorn can't be all bad. ;)

I'd love to see the internal monologue Fisk has running as he gets "SHHHH!!"d by Janus. I'm imagining a Big Numbers kind of moment as he goes completely ballistic and beats the guy's face into paste-- and then drops back into reality, where he's simply smiled patiently.
