The issue starts off with She-Hulk being informed of something about her normal writer/artist of the time, Byrne...

So he's dead and She-Hulk is presented with the task of choosing who will take over. This brings her an amusing bit of variety to choose from(though I only posted a few due to page limits)...

All of them done with a clear bit of self-mockery.
Don't worry though, she's not too keen on this one.

So the search continues!

Apparently Shulkie likes it but she's not a fan of the shape of the word bubbles.
Next!

It packs the punch she wants but she doesn't care for the reused Doom Doom Doom thing which was apparently used in Spider-Man.
Next!

Not quite.
Next!

She-Hulk's quick to bring up the lack of subtly and how her female readers might not like the change.
Eventually she finds something that works(aka the team that takes over after Byrne).

But surprise! Byrne not only isn't dead but has a few changes of his own to propose!

She-Hulk's response?

And so Byrne's run on She-Hulk came to an end.

Note for mods: This issue had 48 pages.

It seems people either love of hate Byrne's run(s) on She-hulk. I think it was a nice change of pace for him and he seemed to really be into it ( unlike many of his projects of the last 10 years where he seems to just be mailing it in).

I liked She-Hulk. It's Byrne's Ambush Bug. And besides, any opportunity to see Terry Austin indulging his Popeye fetish is great.

Also: is it just me or is Byrne only inked effectively when he's at Marvel?

Hmmm, you may have something there.

I liked his She-Hulk run too I have to say.

Not sure about the inking, I was never struck by the way her black (presumably leather) outfits were drawn (And that was at least partly inkers I'd say). Also, I think the recent posting of his Repulse/Dr Polaris story from Action Comics shows he can be inked well at DC too.

The "DOOM DOOM DOOM" thing makes me laugh, as I remember at the time Simonson was pissed at McFarlane for outright tracing the SFX and panel layout from his Beta Ray Bill intro to use in Spiderman.

I rather liked She-Hulk in that period, although I never really followed her too much after the series ended. The whole "turn the lights out" thing that wrapped up the series (pretty sure that was the same run) was brilliant, and I recall a dig at the endless resurrections of Moon Knight at the same time.

Holy crap! I never knew that. Well, I mean, I knew McFarlane was a cheesy bastard, just didn't know he'd completely swipe a layout.

I miss this John Byrne.

He was fucking awesome.

It's one of the reasons why, when I first heard that he'd be rebooting Spider-Man, I thought, "Well, I don't know about these retcons, but at least the writing and the art will be well-done FUN!"

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA oh god it's not funny it hurts so much inside

P.S. It was so cool of everyone else involved to be such a good sport about playing up their own proclivities.

It's self-importance that does him in. This was a time when he could still overcome it.
