So the comic is saying if Bendis wrote Trouble, people would be more respective to a series about Aunt May and Uncle Ben in their young adulthood getting it on?
You see, the jokes're thoughts/concepts familiar to people familiar with the then-current state of Big Two superhero comics.
Presenting them up front makes it easy for the audience to recognize them. The script can just be " this statement here " - leave it up to the artist to do the work to actually make it funny beyond that.
Yeah pointlessly during Mark Millar's Fantastic Four run. It's weirdly one of those things that like Spider-man making a deal with Mephisto in the 101 ways to end the Clone Saga comic, starts out as a joke but like 10 years later Marvel actually winds up doing.
Both anime shows have been so much stripped of everything japanese in USA that we could as well pretend they are cartoons. (not that Pokemon looked that much japanese, but they still felt the need to edit some scenes to replace onigiri with burgers)
I kinda liked the one time they couldn't hid the Onigiri and had Brock say, "when you have lemons you make lemonade, and when you have rice you make rice balls."
But they said this was Wolverine in every comic not every cartoon, and both the YugiOh manga and some of the Pokemon manga were released in English by Viz... so the mixing up of the two of them, and listing them right before "manga" as a generalization still strikes me as odd.
Okay, there's a lot I abhor in this ("getting women", the liberal heart etc.), but I admit I found Yugi as the lead character in "Pokemon" very funny. (I'm assuming it's a deliberate "mistake" for fun.)
This comic was actually a little painful to read, because I really like Mahfood's art--I came yea close to buying a skateboard deck that he'd painted for $50 at a convention once, even though I don't sk8--but the "humor" seems really weirdly ax-grindy, from BP being a white South African (Mike Judge's failed cartoon The Goode Family made basically the same joke) to the Punisher being a bleeding heart liberal. The concept of Frank Castle being affiliated with OWS and BLM is actually kind of terrifying and awesome.
