Uncanny X-Men Annual #18

This is a requested follow-up of sorts to the 'Caliban and Kitty' post from yesterday as the two had another interaction I was not yet aware of. That large hulking guy on the cover? That's Caliban. It was the 90s.

This was a double-sized issue.

A lot has happened in the interim; Sabretooth participated in a massacre of Morlocks and the X-Men are trying to rehabilitate him and Caliban has become considerably different thanks to Apocalypse's augmentations. At one point Caliban had broken Sabretooth's back but Sabretooth survived.

In this issue Caliban has kidnapped Jubilee after discovering about the X-Men and Sabretooth. Here he tries to give her a candy bar he stole from some humans.



























This unfortunately was the last time they had any reaction although Caliban would eventually encounter Sabretooth a couple of more times and gain the upper hand. He also lost his scars but I'm not sure how that happened (unless Apocalypse fixed them).

and why does Marvel keep forgetting that Kitty Pryde is a scary bad ass ninja that even Wolverine is (was) afraid of fighting?

In the removed pages she's able to hold her own against Sabretooth.

I'm not sure if you mean the general ambience, or the art, but I do have to concur, especially about the latter.

Yeah. All of the above. It's even more painful in retrospect, especially after seeing the first set of scans. Claremont is subtle by comparison.

So if Jubilee wants to be called by her name, why does she call him "Buster"?

Because she's the one who was kidnapped, she has no reason to show him any respect at all.

Also, making him use her name is a recommended tactic (according to CSI at least), since it stresses that she is a person in her own right.

Oh, and we also see that he hasn't actually told her his name until she asks he does his "dramatic reveal" bit a couple of pages later.

Some stuff to talk about.

1. Stevie Hunter was Kitty's dance instructor in Salem Center, NY. So, she obviously would become one of the X-Men's normal human allies. Which they don't really have anymore.

2. Caliban joined X-Force after this and a fight with the Dark Riders.

3. The Morlock's Alley was supposed to be more of a "town-sized bomb shelter" under Manhattan more than "sewers." Even a little like that Old West town underneath Arkham City.

Was this actually drawn by a goth teenager?

Other than the specifically Nineties-X-Men design elements, it reminds me of a lot of comics by young artists, going back to the 1940's. It's made of youthful exuberance, strange perspective, and inconsistent anatomy. But this had better printing than they did in the Golden Age.

Image outside the cut is HUGE. It shows up fine (reasonably shrunk) on the scans_daily page, but on my readlist, it's full size.

Do you use a "light" style on your viewer? We've noticed that this can cause issues in the past.

No, this is with my standard layout. Communities filter readlist; it's currently about halfway down the page.

Maybe my layout doesn't accept whatever code's being used to shrink the image. I brought it up because this is the first time in a long time I've seen a huge full-size image outside the cut tag; while a few of the other Scans Daily posts look like they have resizing fail (images larger than are accepted), none of them break my layout.

I'm not particularly worried about it; I'm fine with accepting that it's a known issue with some viewing options and the decision has been made to allow some layout problems rather than requiring a small version of the image outside the cut and a larger version of the same thing inside.

I had this issue as a kid. I always remember being impressed by a scene where Kitty fights Creed to a standstill by phasing her arm through her head and threatening to make it solid and lose the arm just to kill him.
