It wasn't just their appearance IIRC they also swapped powers so now Kurt has to deal with the can't touch anyone thing. And IIRC Rogue makes out with Spiderman in a later issue of forever,
Kurt touching Rogue leaving her with his powers I get, that's happened before with Ms Marvel and all, but this also means Rogue's powers jumped into HIM?
I won't even ASK how that was supposed to have happened.
IIRC it was implied to have been a left over side effect from what Fabian Cortez did to the team in the first few issues. His screwing with their powers caused a lot of weird shit like Kitty gaining one of Wolverine's claws, his healing factor and the ability to grow razor sharp finger nails out of her other hand.
Add to that the fact that in forever Claremont was recycling one of his favorite ideas the implication that mutants powers are doomed to kill them some day with only a few mutants like mystique and Mr. Sinister in his real idenity as the immortal twelve year old stalker of Scott Summers possibly being naturally immune.
In fact IIRC this whole situation was originally set up by mystique to try to share Kurt's potential inherited immunity with Rogue and it kind of back fired.
There were a few obscure hints toward the end of his original run similar to the hints about Scott's childhood bully being Mr. Sinister but they unlike the Sinsiter was nate thing quickly got forgotten about by later writers. Since then Claremont has used the idea a couple of times. It showed up in X-men The End and was mentioned in GeNext which was a psuedo sequel to the end.
Forever is when he really got to run with it though having it be how Magneto was killed by Cortez and why Charles couldn't walk again instead of from injuries from the Shadow King. Plus the whole billionaire conspiracy featuring Tony Stark* as the least evil member wanting to weaponise it and kill ever mutant on the planet plot line.
*Tony had IIRC inherited a position from Howard and stayed in it since he felt he should watch them and because mutants might some day be a threat. HE just balked at Genocide since this wasn't 616 Tony.
Edited (added a bit to one sentence and gain cause I forgot to elaborate on the tony stark thing.) Date: 2016-09-06 08:48 pm (UTC)
I loved this series so much. It was just pure, unfiltered Claremontian insanity, issue after issue.
I mean, don't get me wrong. I love Chris Claremont. But the man needs someone (whether that's a co-writer, like Byrne, where they each compensated for each other's excesses, or a strong editor) to rein him in a bit.

*Edit*
That being said, this is Claremont, so color me surprised if Rogue doesn't give somebody a swashbuckling smooch before this is all over.

I’m not going to let you appropriate one of my character’s major villains.” As I recall, Len Wein crossed the room and shook my hand."

Err, ahem. Fabian Cortez, apparently not missed even by no one ever.

Date: 2016-09-06 11:19 am (UTC)Yeah, that's Claremont a'right.
Being someone who only came in to the X-Men in the early 00s, did Kurt not know about his relation to Mystique by the 90s?
And really, tossing Mystique out the nearest window should really be the X-Men's immediate reaction to her at any time.
