Jesus Christ, deaths to raise the stakes is fucking bog-standard in event comics these days, wouldn't it be nice to have one where nobody actually dies?
I'm going to mention JLA/Titans the Technis Imperative. A DC crossover from the early 00s. No-one died in it. It had consequences that played out through the following Titans run. It was fun and dramatic. It was easy to follow despite *literally having every Teen Titan ever* (plus the active JLA of the time).
Linkara has a video where he names it as one of the best examples of how to do a crossover, and I agree.
We can't exactly prove that, though, can we? Well, I guess that's what the What If series was for. "What if... no one had acted on Ulysees' Logan-related prediction?"
But honestly, this doesn't exactly seem to disprove Cap's point.
So, he'd spontaneously get pumped full of tranqs while near Gabby to facilitate the prediction? Because that's what'd be required for the prediction to come through without SHIELD intervention.
Not spontaneously, no. But there are like a dozen old enemies of "our" Wolverine who would be lining up to take their shot at this guy, sooner than later. There are hundreds of other believable scenarios where Gabby could end up standing next to an Old Man Logan who's loopy from blood loss or being beaten up or trying to fight off hallucinogens or mind control.
Hell, remember the first X-Men movie, where Hugh Jackman Wolverine stabs Rogue to death just because he had a trauma dream? And that Wolverine had less trauma to deal with than this one.
Please. If you want to go that route then all superheroes should be locked up for their whole lives. And not just superheroes.
There's literally billions of scenarios where people from Sabretooth to Katie Power could be a danger to their friends, but that's hardly a reason to go causing situations where they're more probable.
The difference between Sabretooth and Katie Power is that I'd trust one of them to spend an afternoon with my goddaughter.
The contrast in the usual version of Logan, and one of the appeals of his character, is that kids usually are safer standing next to him than apart from him because he'll risk death to protect them without a second thought and can (generally) be trusted to control his animal side around them.
Apply the vast majority of those scenarios to usual Logan and the kids around him will still be fine for that reason, but that's just not necessarily the case with this new guy. And if it were, then it'd be tough to say what's even that different about him, other than grayer hair and a few wrinkles.
It doesn't mean I don't LIKE him! It doesn't mean I don't think it's tragic that he can't be like that. But original-recipe Logan would never have done this because he hadn't seen Old Man Logan's shit, and that's the point.
I recognize that CIVIL WAR II in general, with rapidly decreasing ambiguity or subtlety, is leaning toward the "heroes create problems by trying to fix them" narrative, but I don't think that's what's happening here. And neither, it seems, do Gabby and X-23 in the next issue.
It was Logan did hint that the Gabby in his timeline was evil so even if Ulysses didn't make the prediction, there is a good chance he would have ended up stabbing her eventually.
Personally, I'm still holding out Gabby's survival, though that may be denial and desperation talking. (But, hey, "Gabby R.I.P." might have all the truth telling of "Not an imaginary story!")
I'm not sure why people are freaking out. She's a clone of X-23. That means she has a healing factor (even if she hasn't displayed it yet). In the Annual, Spider-Gwen-In-Laura's-Body impaled herself on her face with her claws and was fine by the end of the issue. I've seen this same fake-out a dozen times in Wolverine comics.
Mm, the Laura-clones pretty explicitly failed to have a factor, and several have died. They even had an alternate no-pain thing done in place of the factor.
