In 2007, IDW put out STAR TREK THE NEXT GENERATION: THE SPACE BETWEEN, a six part miniseries set at various times during the shows 7 year run. It sort of tied together in the last issue, but not really.

The first issue takes placing during the first season of TNG.

Ah, the first season of STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION. Will Riker is clean-shaven, Tasha Yar is alive, Troi dresses like a cheerleader, Geordi is the (blind) navigator, I'm not sure what Worf's job is, and the identity of the Chief Engineer is a closely guarded secret.

Riker, Yar and Data beam down.

Data, Yar and RIker find out the gravometric pulse is being used to rewrite the planet's historical records.

The three are stunned and a pulse sends the Enterprise away from the planet fast.

See, it's funny because... Wait, did Worf ever go to the Gamma Quadrant on "Deep Space Nine?"

Picard tells the Secret Chief Engineer to use SCIENCE to slingshot the Enterprise back in time to the planet shortly after they left.

Riker and Yar escape their cell using technobabble on their combadges and Riker flirting with their (male) guard.

Hey, Data told a joke. Sort of.

The story ends with Data and Yar standing in the conference room, while Data wonders if his quest to be more human is really worth all the trouble.

Thing became rather different in the second season. Riker growing a beard somehow led to Worf getting a position I understood and Geordi becoming the Not-So-Secret Chief Engineer.

Jonathan Frakes and LaVar Burton discuss "Riker's Beard" on "Attack of the Show." It involved eyeliner pencils. "We'll shape it, so it will be decorative."

Worf was the relief officer, which is exactly what it sounds like. He fills in at any station that needs filling in. It's a real-life thin in navies, if I understand correctly.

"Lomac and Lomac... there is no Lomac!"
Ack! A Spock's Brain reference! Quick, kill it before it can spread!

-"Wait, did Worf ever go to the Gamma Quadrant on Deep Space Nine?"
Sure, several times.

-"the identity of the chief engineer is a closely-guarded secret"-
Nah, it just keep changing from episode to episode.
When they acknowledged they had a chief engineer at all, that is.

"Sure, several times." including that prison camp episode... reason enough to want to avoid it.

Is that the one where he gets beaten up to show how tough the bad guys are? Oh wait, that doesn't really narrow things down does it? ;)

Yeah actually the Worf Effect was kinda turned on it's head in "By Inferno's Light."

Yeah Worf was beaten up a lot in that episode by the Jem Ha'Dar guy... but it was to show how tough Worf was, because even when Martok told him to stay down he kept getting back up.

"...pushing us across the galaxy at near-light speeds."

Chill, guys. It would take you, what, a month or more just to get pushed out of the local planetary system at that rate. :P This is what warp drive is for! 'Straining the engines...' HA!

It's pretty simple; Worf is the tactical officer, which is why he's giving tactical information to the captain, such as; "ship on an intercept course", "they're raising shields", "enemy ship charging phasers", etc. He presses the fire button on the guns. Tactical is a command position, hence him wearing command red in season 1, and in DS9 where he is in a tactical position again.

He took over Yar's job as security chief (because it was the honorable thing to do, good ol' Worf), which is why he took to wearing operations yellow.

While he's on the bridge he still fills the role of tactical, he's basically doing two jobs, internal ship security, and external tactical analysis. And people think Worf is stupid for some reason!
