Issue 2 of IDW's STAR TREK TNG: THE SPACE BETWEEN is set right after the events of "Unification."

It's mostly a murder mystery, but the important part: Holodeck Disco!

Hey, an "Enterprise" reference.

Here's a link to info about the Captain of the Columbia: http://memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Erika_Hernandez

Forget the archeology mystery. Because DISCO!!!

Well. That's something.

The rest of the issue is Picard trying to solve a murder mystery on the planet. He's about to get
killed when his team beams down to save him.

Two hundred years seems like a really long time for two corpses exposed to the elements to remain so complete, so pristine, and still locked in the positions of their last moments. I would expect scavengers, decay, even gravity to have jumbled them around a bit.

I thought they didn't use money then?

Shhh.... pay no attention to the nebulous economic system behind the curtain!

As I've always understood it, the Federation doesn't use money internally.

Are you a Federation citizen? Want a hot dog from a food cart on the street corner on Earth? Well, just ask. Basic necessities like food, clothing, shelter... all covered. No need to keep track of who owes what to whom since everyone works together to make sure everyone is provided for when it comes to such things.

But the Federation also realizes that they have to trade with other civilizations, and other civilizations still expect to be paid. The Ferengi use gold-pressed latinum as their standard currency and as a result so do many other people. Federation needs to trade with other people? They barter hard goods, services, or stocks of latinum. Just because they've stopped trading within their own borders doesn't mean they've forgotten how it works out there in the rest of the galaxy.

But the existence of replicator technology renders any physical item worthless as a fiscal commodity, Gold pressed latinum can be replicated just as easily as anything else. So the Ferengi trading with the Federation using it as a currency is nuworkable.

Star Trek Handwavium at its finest.

You can't replicate the stuff. Why? I imagine for the reason you just stated. If you could, it wouldn't be worth much. So... um... you just can't. That's why it's used as money.

I love Trek, but yeah... there are times it's better to just not ask.

Agreed, best not to think about it, though that is a decent try at an explanation.

Well, I can see where the idea for the subspace party amplifier might have come from.
