Legendary artist Steve Dillon has died.

Most of us will know him for his work with Garth Ennis on Punisher and Preacher, but before breaking into the American Marked. He did wonderful work for 2000ad.

This is very, very sad news... His work wasn't always to my tastes, but his talent was undeniable.

I love his stuff on Hellblazer, sad to lose such a distinct artist.

Dillon will be missed. At his best he could, much like his frequent collaborator Ennis, bring a grimace or curled lip to my face with his no-holds-barred depictions of violence and horror, then turn around and bring a tear to my eye with his rendering of a tender romantic or friendship scene. Rest in peace, Steve Dillon, and thank you.

Word is that Dillon thought he had food poisoning, but it turned out to be a ruptured appendix.

Take care of yourselves out there.

Although I'd complained a bit about the sameface of his work for the last few years, he was still one of the best and most distinctive artists of the last few decades, with lots of early work that many of his Preacher and Punisher fans may not be aware of--for example, he was one of Alan Moore's earliest collaborators on the SF-humor series "Abelard Snazz, the Man with the Multi-Storey Brain." And his and Ennis' Hellblazer story "Confession" is maybe my favorite from either creator and for the character; it's sublime and horrifying.
