Well.... It could be worse. Not as bad as the G.I. Joe stuff, I suppose. Setting the bar pretty low, I know. Maybe it is just having Kup, he's probably my favourite Transformer.
The GI Joe stuff wouldn't be so bad if it didn't require the Joes to be carrying around an idiot ball so heavy.
I was wondering how long this crossover was going to go on so I went to TF Wiki to do some checking and I discovered something I hadn't known...
"the Jem and the Holograms comic which began publishing in 2015 has been stated to have also been placed into the new shared universe, but won't be appearing in Revolution for "reasons of tone" compared to the other titles."
Jem is part of the Revolution universe.
Jem & the Holograms is part of the Transformers Universe. If this doesn't end up with a Holograms concert on the Lost Light at some point I'm going to break my pencil.
On the topic of the Joes carrying the idiot ball, between Dire Wraith Colton and Miles Mayhem, they'd been working on incomplete information and outright lies since before the crossover started. Sentinel Prime using Alpha Trions body to attack a Joe convoy probably didn't help either. But as we saw with Mainframe here, and comments Marissa Fairbourne made over in the TF Revolution one-shot, once the Joes start to put the pieces together, things move very quickly indeed, to the point the Wraiths are going very heavily public in a panic, and Mayhem knows he has to cut his losses and run.
If I recall Kelly Thompson's Jem and the Holograms comic is not part of the Transformers Universe (Kelly and Barber talked about it and both decided not to include it) but Barber did say that there was a version of Jem and the Holograms in the TF universe and that we were going to see hints of their presence like maybe Scarlett wearing a Jem and the Holograms t-shirts or Jem being listened to all the way to Cybertron.
Heck I think we see in one of the Action Man comics that Ian has a Misfits poster.
I only ever knew of Action Man because of the cartoon, but... Is AM supposed to be that young? He looked in his thirties in the cartoon, but he looks much younger here.
In any case, this is pretty good. When I got the Humble TF Bundle, I ignored the Action Man comics because I had no interest in the character. But he seems very likeable here. Guess I'll check out those comics, then.
Completely different backstory. Action Man is like 007, it's a title, not a particular person.
The previous Action Man was the epitome of the Renaissance Man coupled with a master combatant and brilliant espionage agent, and he died (or seemed to) saving this kid, a new agent who showed some promise for becoming Action Man eventually, but nothing like this soon. Also the new kid was appointed over the head of a more experienced agent for reasons we're not quite sure of yet.
I wasn't expecting that. Normally cartoon versions of comic book/videogame/movie characters are a "lighter & softer" take on the character (sometimes, insanely so. I still shudder to think they made a freaking saturday morning cartoon of Rambo). But the amnesia thing was a pivotal feature of cartoon!Action Man, it was his motive and backstory and tie to the villain all rolled into one convenient trope. It's extremely bizarre that the other versions of the character don't have it.
In fairness amnesiac Action Man was not the original concept of the toys either, which were much more like GI Joe, then for the first cartoons (which appear comparatively late in his existence) he was amnesiac, and then a couple of iterations later he became the "AMP it up!" extreme sports guy (whose spirit lives on in the Miraculous Ladybug's "Lucky Charm" effect! :) )
They completely re-did the whole Action Man story, it's now a Government program done by the UK (since the 1800's I think, I dunno but they mentioned it's been a thing for a while) and different people have held the Action Man title.
Ian Noble was given the title after his predecessor died saving him (something which Ian carries a tremendous guilt for especially since he thinks it's his fault). Ian is reckless and he tends to be shit at being sneaky ("I'm Action man! Not Infiltration man!") and also gets hurt a lot but at the end of the day he gets the job done. He also loves making pun jokes and is really optimistic and carefree (despite the fact that his comic also hints at him being an outsider before he joined the AM team).
Ian also has a pretty solid supporting cast (which I hope doesn't get tossed aside when Revolutionaries happens) and the villain Doctor X plays a role in his comic as well although there's a bit of an interesting twist with that character.
Sorta-kinda. Another company was involved but they handled the UK licensing of Hasbro stuff, the Action Man line involved GI Joe toes, and Hasbro eventually bought their stuff after they went under.
