"We're all human, and we've all got that. That's worth something, being human. That's probably the moral of everything I've done, to be honest. It's not a great or meaningful message, but there we are. We exist." -- Al Ewing
"Love" is not quite the word… He's sort of one-note to me, and I find too much Karnak gets repetitive fast. However, his alien ethics are distant enough from both superheroes and supervillains that he makes stories more interesting when thrown into the mix, and I appreciate the character for that.
I think he finds something about every character to love (or something), which is his biggest strength as a writer. He's really good at making POVs felt
As horrible of a person as Karnak is (or at least, makes himself seem to be), I really like this part of his teaching method, right here. Not telling Ulysses what to do when the vision hits, just Karnak asking what he learned as a prompt for Ulysses to apply that knowledge. Teaching him self-reliance.
I'm going to have to remember the "what have you learned?" method when I'm training new hires at work.
Stuff about noticing the small details reminds me of "Minority Report" (duh) and the Eddie Murphy comedy "Metro."
Scott Roper: Okay, stop right there. Close your eyes.
Kevin McCall: Okay.
Scott Roper: Tell me what you see.
Kevin McCall: I see a scumbag behind the counter with a sawed-off. Nine-millimetre tucked away in his waistband. There's a female hostage down in front of the cereal rack... with a red polka-dot dress. Another hostage three feet to her right, with blue jeans and a checkered shirt. A male hostage down, green shirt, white pants, in front of the candy rack. There's a female scumbag behind me with a gun tucked away in her shirt... trying to pass herself off as a hostage. And there's a special on toilet paper, four for $ 1.29. That's a lot of toilet paper.
I'd love it if he got really popular in New York as Hoboman. And the New Yorkers would chant it whenever he shows up. And his philosophy means he has to pretend he doesn't care.

Bottom line: If slash, feminism or anti-oppressive practice makes you react negatively, scans_daily is probably not for you.
