In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like. Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat amongst yourselves.

Sort of in a rush this morning, so will leave this one short and sweet, knowing full well that you good people out there will populate it with your own special brand of... being yourselves!

I will mention is this article about the White House is having a hard time fidning A-list stars to perform at the Presidential inauguration. Whilst President Obama's staff managed to get the likes of Beyonce and Aretha Franklin, Preident-Elect Trump's staff are finding that a LOT of stars are suddenly terribly busy that day, presumably washing their hair.. or something. But all is not lost, some stars DID speak up for Trump, so the Inauguration could be serenaded by the likes of ummm.... Ted Nugent, Kid Rock or Billy Ray Cyrus?

Watching the Dragon Ball Super movies reminded me of how irritating it is that the general consensus among writers/editors/producers is that Married Characters Are Not Relatable Nor Interesting(TM).

All the protagonists in Dragon Ball are family men. Goku is a grandfather at that! The only adult protagonist who is not married is Piccolo, who is a member of a genderless race that reproduces asexually by vomiting eggs, and I'd say he still counts as family man because he raised Gohan as his own son and is now raising Pan. Yet the series is as popular and iconic as ever.

I wish more series let their characters get and stay married :/

I agree with your point! I think Goku's a hilarious example of a married man, though.

When Future!Trunks kissed Future!Mai, Goku reacted with astonishment "Trunks, why are ya putting your mouth on hers!?"

Vegeta: "...aren't you married?"

Goku: "Yeah, but what does that have to do with this?"

Vegeta: *brain breaking noises*

It's even more hilarious that Vegeta of all characters has become the Good Husband type. To the point that they are using him to promote refrigerators XD

I think Trump should reach across the Atlantic for some talent. He could have Jim Davidson or Roy "Chubby" Brown, I'm sure they'd fit in so well that they might even land a cabinet seat. It is a shame Bernard Manning is dead* as he would be pitch perfect for Trump's style of politics.

* not actually a shame

I thought that shunning anything White House would be a good way to show discontent. I wonder how many athletes will skip the trip to the White House after winning a championship in the next four years?

Actually, now that I think about it, quick question to the mods. Is it okay to make a community post just to show cool fancomics? I know we can make no_scans posts, but I usually see them for trailers and interviews. And I know we sometimes have those Fanart Tuesdays posts, but I'm not sure if they are special occasions (like, the fanart equivalent of these Off- Topic Tuesday posts), or if anybody can post fanart whenever they want.

I don't think there's any rule against posting Webcomics and Fan omics, so long as you credit the original source (and adhere to the four-page limit rule).

I've been out of religiously reading Bat comics for awhile now, but something has been bothering me:

is Bruce okay with Jason Todd murdering criminals, i.e. he doesn't do everything in his power to put Jason behind bars? Like, is Bruce's no-kill code just as strong and black-and-white as I remember it to be? I mostly remember how much of a hard-ass he was towards Huntress in the Greg Rucka days for using a crossbow.

From: [personal profile] janegray
That seems to depend on the writer. Last I checked (which was a good while ago, so things may be different now), Jason does refrain from killing whenever he works with the Batclan, and uses only rubber bullets. Jason occasionally still kills people when he is on his own, though doesn't actively pursue them Punisher-style anymore, mostly just doesn't really hold back when they attack him. Again, though, it has been a while and things may be very different now. I keep meaning to check out the new Red Hood series, but my movie/show/comic/book/videogame backlogs are insane and I keep running out of spare time.

I know many fans think that it's OOC for Bruce to keep Jason around even when Jason hasn't completely given up killing, but if you ask me, it makes perfect sense.

First: because, frankly, putting Jason behind bars doesn't work. He just gets out. Whereas keeping him around actually let Bruce get through to him: Jason is not completely redeemed, but he DOES only use rubber bullets whenever he works anywhere near the Batfamily, which is basically 100% of the time in Gotham. Keeping him around may be considered immoral because even just one murder ir one too many, but it's definitely the most efficient and effective way of addressing the problem.

Second: because, last I checked, his kills are assassins and mercenaries that were shooting at him, often in foreign war zones. Even if Batman decided to take Jason down, there may very well be no real legal case to keep him locked up. Or at the very least the legal context may be muddy enough to let him slip through with a good laywer (especially in Gotham, where Penguin is officially a respectable citizen).

Third: Batman seems to have no problem working with other heroes who are willing to take lives (Wonder Woman, Batwoman, Catwoman) and with cops. So obsessively clinging to the "though shall NEVER kill under ANY circumstance!" mantra can't really work. He doesn't even have the "they are not wearing MY symbol though" excuse anymore because Batwoman totally does.

*sigh*

I really have been away from comics for too long.

I didn't know that Batwoman kills. And Bats being fine with Selina's killing of Black Mask never sat right with me. The way you explain the Jason issue here makes sense to me on an intellectual level, but doesn't sit right with me on an emotional level that grew up with the Batman whose philosophy was "everyone lives if I can help it."

Batwoman used to be in the military. She doesn't normally kill people as a superhero, but she was a trained soldier who fought with guns in war zones. If she is forced to take a life for the greater good, she can live with that. Same as Wonder Woman.

Is that a retcon? Because in the version that I'm familiar with (Rucka's origin), she got kicked out for DADT reasons while she was still a cadet at West Point.

The more Trump picks people for his cabinet, the more I think he is intentionally getting exact opposite of whatever the position needs. I mean, let's rundown some of his choices, picks, and people up for consideration:

+ Andrew Puzder for Secretary of Labor (owner of Hardee's and hater of the minimum wage)
+ Linda McMahon for Administrator of the Small Business Administration (Co-founder of WWE and involved in very racist, homopobic, and sexist businesses practices and events in her time as CEO of WWE)
+ Scott Pruitt for EPA Administrator (Attorney General of Oklahoma and man who constantly uses the EPA for having regulations meant to protect the environment)
+ Jeff Sessions for Attorney General (Considered to be too racist for a higher position of power in the 80's and only went against the KKK because they were known to smoke marijuana)
+ Betsy DeVos for Education Secretary (Built a legacy out of making money from private and charter schools. Also wants to do away with child labor laws)
+ James Mattis for Defense Secretary (Nicknamed Mad Dog and has a bit of bloodlust to him)
+ Reince Priebus for Chief of Staff (Leader of the insane asylum that's become the Republican Party and lacks a spine in every way)
+ Steven Mnuchin for Secretary of the Treasury (17 years in Golden Sachs
+ Michael Flynn as National Security Advisor (Retired Lt. General and full time Islamophobe, psychopath, and conspiracy theory nutjob)
+ Sean Spicer for Press Secretary (Tried to defend Melina Trump's plagarism by quoting My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic... and getting the reference completely wrong)
+ The following were considered for Secretary of State: Mitt Romney (corporate raider and human robot), David Petraeus (leaked confidential and classified information), Newt Gingrich (considers feelings more important than facts and serial adulter), Rudy Giuliani (also serial adulter and crazy man)
+ Ben Carson for Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (brain surgeon, constantly half-awake, and has no experience in housing)
+ Mary Fallin for potentially Secretary of Interior (Governor of Oklahoma, Islamphobe, homophobe, and gun nut)
+ Sarah Palin also being considered for the same position. No explanation required.
+ Forrest Lucas for Secretary of Agriculture (Founder of Lucas Oil Products, oil industry executive, and anti-animal rights activist)
+ Steven Bannon, Kellyanne Conway, and Corey Lewandowski for senior advisors (crazy, racist, and anti-intellectuals)
+ Mike Pompeo for CIA Director (Congressman from Kansas and gigantic Islamphobe)
+ Nikki Haley for UN Ambassador (Governor of South Carolina. Has no experience in foreign policy at all)

And just recently, rumor has it it Rick Perry has been tapped for Department of Energy (once of the agencies he wanted to get rid and I believe forgot in his legendary Oops moment) and confirmed Rex Tillerson (the most stereotypical names for a man working in the oil business) as Secretary of State, a guy with ties to Russia, CEO of Exxon Mobil, and who has no experience required for the experience.

What is going on anymore?!

It's all so awful I've just tried to numb myself to everything.

I am interested in seeing how this Russia investigation goes. To make sure I don't get my hopes up, I'm telling myself that they won't uncover anything too new and significant . . . but who knows. Maybe the universe will be kind and Trump will end up in jail for treason (not counting on it, but one can always dream).

It'll probably go the way of the NFL's investigation of Deflategate 2.0. This week the Giants accused the Steelers of using underinflated footballs and measured them. They came under the legal limit. The NFL says, "Nothing to see here!" (and ESPN and all media outlets got their marching orders as you probably haven't heard anything about this while the first brouhaha ended up on the three networks' evening news) after they docked 2 draft picks and a million bucks from the Patriots AFTER THE WELLS REPORT EXONERATED THEM, and suspended the greatest quarterback in the game for 4 games while smearing his reputation WITH NO EVIDENCE BECAUSE IT WAS THE IDEAL GAS LAW, NFL DUMMIES!

So, yeah, the Government will conclude nothing happened by the Russians. And Oswald was the lone gunman, too.

Yeah, given Jill Stein's recount bid having come to an end, the last chance to stop Trump from taking office lies with the electoral college next week. And the likelihood of a critical number of electors going faithless and choosing Clinton, another Republican, or "let the House decide" is slim to bupkes. (And if it went to the House, they'd almost certainly choose Trump.)

The only other way to undo the election result would be a massive popular uprising. Given that millions of Americans are too apathetic even to have voted in the first place, let alone perform even the mildest act of protest like picking up a phone, that's even less likely to happen.

So let's all hope Trump at least doesn't start World War III (nuclear or otherwise), and let's all look after each other. Peace.

"Nearly 45,000 people signed an online petition asking UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to reconsider selection of the character, typically clad in a red, white and blue body suit.

'Although the original creators may have intended Wonder Woman to represent a strong and independent 'warrior' woman with a feminist message, the reality is that the character's current iteration is that of a large breasted, white woman of impossible proportions, scantily clad in a shimmery, thigh-baring body suit,' the petition read."

Completely dismisses the character based off of physical appearances while describing an image of the character that isn't even reflected in modern depictions. I guess that Diana doesn't look like the type of feminist or women's right advocate that is easily-digestible for some UN folks. It doesn't seem like anyone that petitioned against her special ambassadorship knows anything about the character.

Wonder Woman is one of my top 10 favourite characters of all time, and I'm just sitting here trying to contain the flames on the side of my face.

(Gotta love the whole hypocrisy of "you take too many of your clothes off, you can't be a real feminist" and "you wear too many clothes (i.e. a hijab, a burkini, etc.), you can't be a real feminist". It all comes down to women's bodies as objects, doesn't it?)

It's upsetting. Diana was a great choice!

And I'm really not a fan of the wording there. At all.

I think in this Comm we are all familiar with the discussions about fanservice and oversexualization, exploitation and sexual freedom, objectification and reclaiming of sexuality, and how "women are drawn the way men want to fuck, men are drawn the way men want to be."

But that petition there sounds outright slut-shaming to me. The focus on large breasts in addition to the anatomy issues, and the creepy-sounding description of the suit. They sound so disgusted.

Seems to me that the Amazons are proud of their bodies and don't have hang-ups about hiding them under layers of clothing. Wonder Woman's message has always been about female empowerment. Pity the dissenters didn't do their homework.

Asked? Like a peasant!? *unmonocled*

;P

I'll admit to heresy here: I'm not really a Studio Ghibli fan. Spirited Away bored me to tears, and I couldn't even bring myself to finish watching Grave of the Fireflies because TEARS period (and not in the "ohhhh, after a good cry I now feel better!" way, but rather in the "welp, THAT didn't help with my depression and now I feel like shit and don't want to get up" way). I thought Kiki's Delivery Service was solid and entertaining, but nothing I ever felt the urge to see twice. I did like Porco Rosso a lot as a whole, but the ending failed to bring closure so I was left very unsatisfied (AHHHHHHH STUPID PORCO HOW DARE YOU ABANDON GINA ;_;)

Since none of the Ghibli movies I had seen had ever truly hooked me, I figured the studio just wasn't up my alley and I didn't watch the rest of their library. Until last week my boyfriend (who is a HUGE ghibli fan) convinced me to give it another try.

I seriously didn't expect to love Laputa. It was AWESOME. I'm so happy it proved me wrong :D
