So what was the most popular and beloved in-universe heroine of the Marvel Universe up to during the first Civil War?

We start with Ms. Marvel #7...

msmarvel0703

msmarvel0704

msmarvel0705

...she can't run forever.

And we wrap with Ms. Marvel #8...

Wonder Man: Carol, we did what we had to do.

Carol: It was so EASY to stand here and say what we were doing was for the BEST.

Wonder Man: You don't think we WERE? You said it yourself, Carol. Julia broke the law. She HURT people. We wouldn't let SOMEONE ELSE just walk away from that.

Carol: No...

msmarvel0808

Carol: But I'm still the person who took away her mommy.

And end of conversation cause Wonder Man switches topics!

Uh... I don't get it? Where's Ms. Marvel?

OH. Oh right. There use to be that other Ms. Marvel.

*sigh*
Our heroes, people.

Simon Williams is officially The Worst.
(Why did Carol, Wanda and Beast find him attractive anyway?)

I dunno. I've always found Simon to be self-absorbed, arrogant, egotistical and obnoxious. And that -wasn't- when Steve Englehart was writing him in West Coast Avengers, when he was also whiny, over-confident, and a preening twit.

So why do Wanda and Hank find him attractive?
What is there to like?

Somehow, sadly, it just doesn't seem likely.

three of those are the same thing. I generally find him fairly funny, when playing off the right people and the stuff you complain about is because of self-esteem issues

I miss Araña's (or Spider-Girl now I guess blegh) exoskeleton. It looked awesome and set her apart from the other spider-people

The first single issue I bought was the issue where the Doomsday Man ripped off her carapace. I yelled while reading it.

I noticed there was a pretty systematic depowering of her over a period. Lost her exoskeleton, lost the rest of her powers...

I think it was partly to get away from the Spider-Totem stuff that she was pretty closely associated with in her original stories. They pretty much abandoned that with Peter, after all - I'm not sure if they mentioned it during Morlun's recent comeback at all.

They did, it was a big part of Spider-Verse and Anya was still considered a Totem. But after Spider-Island, she just has the sane powers as Peter.

It wasn't that long since we last saw Anya. Besides, i liked it when she became Spider-Girl and took up Julia's old costume.

Besides, Arańa is just Spider in Spanish and that seemed lazy and english speaking folk kept writting it as "Arana" instead of Arańa and that was annoying.

A) I love that double page highway fight
B) the two issues that followed this were probably the best in Reed's run.

As much as I like the main book, I can't really share the same sentiment for most of the tie-ins, since they usually painted one side as right and the other as either totalitarian evildoers or immature anarchists.

You know, the main thing that bothered me was how vigorously some of these people turned on their friends. You never really saw things like "You're under arrest, Julia. As soon as I find where I put my cuffs. Which might take a while."

Because some lunatic like Frank Castle or, I don't know, some reckless neophyte is one thing. Experienced heroes are another.

For that matter, why weren't all members of the Avengers past and present automatically registered? They had to pass a basic security clearance to join and their ID was already the n an encrypted server. I remember it being brought up when Rage joined, for example.

What's with this "logic" you keep trying to apply to things?

I don't mind if things only make comic book level sense, but this didn't even have that.

About the only variable in Carol's favor here was that Julia was keeping company with the Shroud, who's something of a fringe figure. Even though any of the WCA-era Avengers (and Captain freaking America) would be able to tell you he's 100% on the side of the angels.

Been meaning to post the Rage bit for sometime, the computer doesn't keep your ID past the initial security check, it was a pretty good set-up I thought.

It really was an excellent bit. I'd forgotten about it, actually, until I wrote the above comment.

Ugh. Ugh. Ugh.
This further contributed to the ruining of the Shroud, who was always a cool C-list character.
And as for Carol and how she handled things with Julia... BLEH. It's like there's no mutual respect for fellow Avengers, past and present, or willingness to compromise.

And capekillers is a fucking stupid term. First, because they're not specifically aimed at killing superhumans, and second, because WHO WEARS CAPES IN THE MARVEL UNIVERSE? I mean Thor, Doctor Strange, Sentry, Scarlet Witch, and Doctor Doom. That's about it. X-Men don't wear capes, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, the Fantastic Four, most of the Avengers-- in short, everyone who's -really- in the public eye to shape the public consciousness of what represents superhumans, none of them wear capes. Just a magician, a witch, a god, and a megalomaniacal villain, and a guy no one remembers half the time.

So calling them "capes" makes no sense. "Masks," sure. Masks would make sense since the majority of heroes, even publicly known ones, wear masks, especially those who wouldn't yet be registered. "Maskcatcher" there you go.

Sigh.

they treated Carol terribly in these books with how little loyalty she had to others. Especially when she's had a period of I don't like what's going on so fuck it, I'm out of here in her career

Because when she's done right, she's pretty awesome. This run under Reed (where the goal was 'being the best of the best' and resulted in nightmarish shit like this) and Civil War II are just so prominent that it creates a real bad impression.

Meanwhile, we had a good few years of Deconnick quietly churning out great superhero/spacefaring stuff that tends to go ignored. That run alone is why I like Carol.
