Well, everything about that country's disgusting.

... but in all seriousness, is it ever addressed how nobody knew about something like this before?
Forget the huge problem that would be how Magneto never learnt about this place (which incidentally would kind of validate a lot of his "humans are bastards" talk), why hasn't anyone else?
In a world with a telepath like Xavier, how's no-one noticed Genosha sucks so damn much?

I may be mistaken but in addition to the "metaphor of the moment" noted below, I think Genosha was painted as being extremely isolationist (because their mutant slave workforce helped make them completely self-sufficient), and ultimately pretty small. Easier to fly under the radar in that case.

Its an Apartheid metaphor. Everyone knew about South Africa, but few did anything about it. It is a fairly poor squash into the Marvel Universe, which is full of people with a lot of personal power who make a vocation of Doing Something About It.

Genosha was a "metaphor of the moment" whenever it was used. It worked as a metaphor for Bosnia in the "Bloodlines" crossover.
