The current Superman is the number one reason I suspect DC has plans at least one more quasi-reboot in the future. They can't possibly plan to keep the current set-up of "Superman is actually a survivor of an erased alternate reality, who took over for this reality's Superman, who's dead." Not permanently.
This being comics, they won't have to. They'll occasionally bring it up now and then over time. Then less and less until it just gets ignored or some event allows them to stop even referencing it entirely ever again. They don't need to retcon it, just quietly forget it.
I don't think that would work. The current guy comes from a different portrayal of Krypton than the current Supergirl and every other Kryptonian. Every time you re-introduce a pre-New 52 character, it's going to be someone he already knows about, so you can't play it as a regular 'first meeting.' And what about all his old friends and acquaintances from his past; he doesn't share experiences with this Lana, doesn't know this Peter Ross, can't reminisce about the early days of the League with this Batman, etc. There are just too many hurdles.
It'd be one thing if he had a nearly identical history to the New 52 version, but it's clearly shown that the two are quite different.
I haven't read many mainstream comics consistently for 5 years now, and statements like "Superman is actually a survivor of an erased alternate reality, who took over for this reality's Superman, who's dead" is such a turn-off and deters me from getting back into reading consistently. Needlessly convoluted and complicated.
Sad thing is, he USED to be great at retcons. He actually made me give a damn about Dr. Fate and Hawkman during his JSA run. Though Dr. Fate became increasingly muddled as it continued, to the point it was so convoluted, I had no idea what was going on.
And of course, Green Lantern: Reboot, where he brought back and redeemed Hal in a way I never thought possible. Though Hal himself remains an uninteresting character to me and I always preferred Kyle.
When you have so many books being published by so many authors, there's always going to be a pocket of complicated weirdness here and there. This is nothing new. Recall pre-Crisis Black Canary's origin: "The original Black Canary's mind and memories inhabiting the body of her adult daughter. Oh, and the two are from an alternate reality." And then there's the jigsaw puzzle that's post-Crisis Hawkman.
I'm not sure the three Jokers counts, though. That sounds more like a specific storyline, not some status quo meant for the long term. Not that different from a story of Hero X meeting a clone or whatever.
I guess that's an issue I've had with the comics medium for awhile. I remember rolling my eyes when first learning that Dark Phoenix wasn't Jean Grey after all. Maybe the complicated weirdness is a symptim of the long-running serial. It happens a lot in long-running tv shows too where the storylines go bonkers.
Which is a shame. I feel like a lot of mainstream superhero titles struggle between the publishers wanting the stories to be accessible to new (or returning) readers, but a lot of writers fall into the continuity lock-out trope.
I've never gotten out of comics, but I actually find that statement to be one of the things I love about them. That literally anything can happen and there's always a way around anything.
It kind of feels like Supes is trying manipulate the rest of his team into going from distrusting him to distrusting Batman. This isn't another Hydra!Cap situation, is it?
*rolls eyes* And what if you're the one who gets mind-controlled or magicked, Brucie? I hate this stupid Bat worship SO MUCH.
Still, it was nice to see them discuss the constant reality warping of their lives. I can't help but feel it makes reboots pointless because pre-52 Superman still has all that bad continuity that is so harrd. And he has to be old in order to have a kid that old. Unless he's immortal. But Lois still should show something.
That's what Dick, Barbara, Jason, Tim and all the rest of the Batfamily are for. They're the ones who know him well enough to realise when it's not him in control, and know his weaknesses enough to bring him down, or direct others in doing so.
Oh shut up Batman! You security is joke Gizmo for gods sake can hack your computers. Justuse your bullshit photographic memory on your plans and should be mind controlled to reveal everything erase your mind you have what 10,000 copies of a back up memory.
Also stop throwing that "I'm only human with my wits" NO! your not human, your fucking meme and your superpower is your money, so shut up and dance monkey.
