A little bit of meta from Spider-Man #16
May. 16th, 2017 01:58 pm"I've not seen ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming,’ so I’m gonna wait until we see what we see. But, yeah, it was bizarre and flattering. I don’t even know if Ganke was the inspiration [for the character of Ned], or they just got to their own place with a character like this on their own. I don’t know. It does seem like it might have been, but no one’s told me either way. There’s so much else in that trailer that’s from ‘Ultimate Spider-Man’ that I would assume that, yes, it is… It’s weird only because Ganke wasn’t part of Peter’s story — he was part of Miles’ story.” - Brian Michael Bendis

(For those not familiar, Ned in 'Homecoming' is basically Ganke; a chubby Asian kid who is best friends with Spider-Man and builds with LEGOs.)

That would be stronger than making yet another version of Peter Parker as Spider-Man.

Date: 2017-05-18 12:42 am (UTC)As it is there's not a whole lot to Miles as a character and by introducing him instead of Pete first without his origin as following the death of Peter there'd be even less to work with.

Date: 2017-05-17 11:13 am (UTC)I'm also not sure that 'appropriation,' works here. I usually see appropriation used to indicate repackaging aspects of a minority culture in a shallow way for consumption by those who aren't a part of that culture. I could be wrong, but I don't think African-Americans have any inherent cultural claim on having chubby Asian friends.

It was drawn up and signed in the 90, so it does predate Miles Morales by decades, and wasn't made with that character in mind, but it's still binding".
