Yeah. I never liked where Polaris has gone since this point.
She really should be a mutant at least on par with Magneto. I mean, if Magneto had a son who had his same magnetic powers we would expect them to be equals. For some reason no writer has ever taken Lorna there.
Polaris has been shown to be powerful but only when she "goes crazy". It is like her real power is being a bi-polar crazy woman. It is really just dumb.
Well, I'd imagine that part of what makes 'ol papa Mags so powerful is that he went out of his way to build up a considerable knowledge of magnetism (even if his sources were questionable at best), he certainly monologues about justifications for why he can do the stuff he does like someone who did. And he's got a habit of having his bouts of power-blamed mental instability as well.
He's a scientist who understands his powers better than almost any other superhuman. He's built machines to enhance his powers, and even altered the planet's EM field when it suited him (inhibiting long range telepathy, for instance).
More than that, he's had decades of experience , using his powers in ways great and small.
And of course, he's usually the bad guy. He gets to be uber powerful ;)
Some of the follow up issues to this were interesting, since Forge and Havok were trying to convince Lorna that Haven is a bad guy. And Lorna wasn't buying it until it was too late.
X-Factor just really went downhill after He-Who-Will-Not-Be-Mentioned-On-This-Site left. J.M. DeMatteis tried, but it's hard to make a series work when you have plot points like Haven's evil fetus, Multiple Man totally being dead for real you guys, and Random.
And then Howard Mackie showed up, and everything got so much worse.
