You know, one thing you can always say about Steve Dillon, regardless of your opinion on his style, is that he's damn good at drawing smug people.

Those last two panels are pretty much Sheriff Root in Preacher S1.

I wonder what "Earl" the cop is talking about. Earl Scruggs? Earl Thomas Conley?

Years ago, I posted some pages from PREACHER: THE STORY OF YOU KNOW WHO that gave the Root Boy's "origin." A big component is that the Root Boy's classmates hate him because they hate Sherrif Root, and they can't beat up Sherrif Root.

I speculated that after the Root Boy survived shooting himself, one of three things happen.

1. The Root Boy makes a genuine choice to turn his life around.
2. The Root Boy suffers a psychotic break from reality and no one notices.
3. The shotgun pellets damaged his frontal lobe and basically lobotomized the Root Boy, drastically altering his personality.

Knowing Garth Ennis, it could very well be all three at once.
