In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like. Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat amongst yourselves.

Britain has had another pretty awful week, a horrendous fire in London, causing any number of questions about the housing situation and cuts to the Fire and Emegenecy Services. Local's rally round in magnificent

Also in London, a white terrorist attempted to run down a group of worshippers at a Mosque as they left late night prayers. One dead, several injured, and notably, an Imam who protected the attacker from potential angry mob to ensure that the rule of law and justice would proceed. (Even The Daily Mail had, eventually and after it's usual shoddy attempt to victim blaming, to describe a white man as a terrorist, a move so outside their normal scope that a friend of a friend described it as "Like hearing a cat moo")

Also Brexit negotations started... with the UK team immediately capitulating on the order of discussion, a topic which they had promised they would fight all summer long.

In the US, the tentative loosening of diplomatic relations with Cuba initated by Obama, were summarily removed by Trump... citing human rights concerns... Which, given the human right records of certain countries he recently toured and praised to high heaven, seems to be a rather radical disconnect, even by Trumpian standards.

In more upbeat news a College at Oxford University has loaned a 19th century violin to a 14 year-old Syrian refugee and musician.

The opening titles for the new Ducktales series have been previewed, and though the new animation style will take some getting used to, it seems very promising, with some very definite nods to Carl Barks in the layouts.

And it's been announced that Animaniacs may be returning to the small screen

"Transformers: Rescue Bots" which ended after four seasons (and the longest run of any single title in the Transformers franchise" is getting a sequel "Rescue Bots Academy" which will follow the further adventures of the team, as set up in the series finale. Also announced is another Transformers series (presumably something to replace Robots in Disguise?) and new series using the name "Micronauts", though how it ties in to comics old, new, or whatever toy line Hasbro has been working on, is anyone's guess right now.

Peter Capaldi's final season as the Doctor starts it's two part finale this coming weekend, with the return, after fifty years, of the original design "Mondasian Cybermen" (Mondas being the long lost twin planet of Earth that appeared in William Hartnell's final story "The Tenth Planet", which also introduced the Cybermen). Also featured in the trailer is the return of John Simms as the Master which, since the story also includes Michelle Gomez as Missy, makes this the first multiple Master/Mistress story on TV.

Also in a cute note, just discovered that in "Dark Water", the Season 8 story which revealed Missy was the new incarnation of the Master, her line "I am a Mobile Intelligence Systems Interface, MISI for short" (As a fake out, since we viewers had no idea who or what Missy was at that time), was originally recorded as "I am a Random Access Neural Interface, or RANI for short" in case anyone outside the film crew overheard the recording (There was much speculation about that Missy might actually be a regenerated Rani, the amoral scientist Time Lord the 6th and 7th Doctors met) so the surprise could be kept.

I'm just going to put this link to the "Poorly Drawn" webcomic, and say I agree completely on rolling that dice.

Relatedly: Does anyone have that Daily Bugle "Oh God Somebody Do Something" panel as an icon I can swipe?

In less horrible news Tree Bumblebees have reached my garden. In fact one of the new queens, who will be setting off to bulk up to hibernate for next year, reached the inside of my living room window and was quickly ushered back outside. Those things are huge. The UK's first new "natural" species in decades if not centuries, if you don't count eagle owls; which a lot of landowners seem desparate not to for some reason. So some excitement and trepidation there to see how they fit into our ecosystem (My god, bees.....). They should do pretty well, their absence from UK shores was always a puzzle to bee-ologists (a professional title I just made up) since they exist right around the manche and north sea coasts on the continent right up to the Arctic. Of course so do eagle owls, but that is a different rant entirely.

Yay on Rescue Bots effectively getting a continuation- Once I got used to the animation style, that show was surprisingly good.

Yay on a new TF show. RiD didn't do much for me, but that's the way of things, every few years a new show, some work better than others but it keeps things fresh.

I'm just hoping whatever new show we get is still part of the Aligned Continuity. I've heard rumors that it will be part of the Bayverse instead, and I REALLY hope that's not the case.

RiD did nothing for me, to the point that I haven't been watching it (so I'm out of the loop here, it's possible my concerns have already been addressed in the show), so I'm hardly sad to see it go. But what I've seen has hinted at the fact that now Cybertron is being ruled by the same sort of corrups assholes that led to Megatron's rebellion in the first place. Four million years of war, and we are back to square one??? I'll be incredibly annoyed if that's what we are left it when Hasbro shuts down the continuity.

Posting twice is bad form, I know, but I just realized I also want to say something about actual comics.

The new Rivers of London comic miniseries "Detective Stories" is now starting, and this one looks pretty important to book canon so without giving out spoilers I'd recommend fans of the books but this comic.

For the Transformers comics, it looks like the Megatron redemption arc in the "Lost Light" title has come to a conclusion in the issue "This Machine Kills Fascists" and, again without giving out spoilers, I really loved how it ended. It was a really great and satisfying resolution and even in an issue where a character literally got into a fist fight with a moon, the best panel was Megatron getting a phone call right at the end. A very satisfying story arc.

Thanks to the wonders of unpacking, found a trove of old Simpsons comics.
Some good stuff in there. (Still partial to the "Subtitled Scottish Movie" scene...)

Had a near miss with the dog on Saturday. After a week or two of being really worried about her, due to inexplicable quivering and foot-licking (the same thing her uncle went through when he got a sudden case of liver cancer), she began the weekend by being slow, unwilling to move, and constantly gnawing her behind.
Then it turned out she just had a Butt Problem, and she's now back to her usual self.

Not really excited for the Doctor Who finale.
This entire year's been really tepid, and with the batting average it's had, not to mention Moffat's previous record with series finales (one good, two meh, one not great and one "oh for f-"), never mind his average episode skills over the last three years have been...
Not filled with a great amount of confidence.

I really liked the early part of this season, which really had a very distinctive and energetic direction, before it slammed into the huge great cowpat that was the Mouldering Monks trilogy. They were just horribly bland. And before the Missi stuff took over, I really do not like her as a character. I really hope when Chibnall takes over he leaves her and all of that horribly self-indulgent stuff behind. I'm hoping he'll decide to take us back into deep outer space again, and leave Earth alone for a season or two. That is my hope anyway. Although I did read an article somewhere about how he's going to do a Trial of a Timelord season, which I think is probably not wise.

Not to be outdone in the bad news department, the heatwave reached Portugal and a dry thunderstorm at night started a forest fire which in less than 24 hours took 62 lives in Portugal in the area of Pedrógrão Grande, near Coimbra.

Besides the harsh emotional impact this number of deaths has in the population, the worst is that not having any straight cause for this event (the origin of the fire was natural and not arson, the reasons as to why it grew so quickly are a multi-generational problem with no easy solutions) has ended up making the whole media coverage of this a complete chaos where the media has been turning more and more towards the side of trash, including but not limited to filming right besides a corpse of one of the victims during the recovery efforts.

The media situation in Portugal has been particularly bad across the last few years, specially due to its right-wing biases, including our version of the Daily Mail (Correio da Manhã) sharing a video of a rape just one month ago, and this situation only brings it more into the light while the regulatory entities don't do anything.

Got another interview on Monday, this one more promising. I must now take some online tests; if I pass those there will be one or two more interviews. Crossing my fingers as my unemployment insurance runs out at the end of the month.

Over at my blog, a review of a book about two popular subjects, horses and World War Two. "The Perfect Horse" by Elizabeth Letts is a history tome involving Nazi mad horse breeding and a dangerous mission by U.S. Forces to rescue the equines.http://www.skjam.com/2017/06/16/book-review-the-perfect-horse/

"Tiger Mask W" is moving into its big finale, with Tiger the Dark returning to the ring. "Re:Creators" is back to infodumping. And I have started watching the second season of "Attack on Titan." Sasha rocks.

Also, my birthday is next Monday the 26th. I'll be turning 56. https://www.amazon.com/gp/registry/wishlist/560BAIQYFMY5/ref=nav_wishlist_lists_2

Dammit, I'm getting that itch again to create a comics-related YouTube series. If only I had even a sliver of video-creating talent. Or, like, a team where I could do scripts and formatting and have others help with the rest. That's how Extra Creditz operate, for example.

Not only Trump has shown lenience towards Russia, Turkey, Saudi Arabia etc., but punishing the Cuban people because their government violates human rights seems to me completely hypocritical when the U.S. openly maintains a well-known literal, Amnesty-denounced torture camp in Cuban ground.

Finally beat Batman: Arkham City. Only six years after it came out! My backlog is slightly less monstruous now.

Liked it much less than Asylum and Origins, though. I got lost all the damn time. I had to use a guide to find the friggin' door of the building I had already secured. Since I actually managed to find my way without trouble in both Asylum and Origins, I can only assume that the developers were too excited to make an open-word game after the previous much more contained one, and lost sight of the goal to make all those nice new places actually findable.

Still want to play Arkham Knight, but it will be years before I can. My PC is too old to handle the system requirements (I just barely managed to play AC by turning off every single graphic option and selecting the lowest possible settings, and even then it slowed down at times), and I can't justify buying a PS4 when I still have a dozen PS3 games in backlog (and most of those are RPGs, the kind that takes 80 hours to beat).

Oh well. I'll play it eventually.

I actually think AC was easier to navigate than Asylum. In AA I kept on going around in circles trying to find the area I was supposed to go into whereas AC I was able to glide to most of the areas. Hard to say which one I liked more, I have a soft spot for the Gothic horror angle of the first game though.

Finally caught up with Steven Universe. I love the direction the series is going in now, and I am actually fascinated by Lars' development after seasons and seasons of very little redemption for what an ass he can be.

Anyone else into this show? It's inclusiveness of non-binary and gender fluidity is incredible. Also love how a majority of the main cast is voiced by women of color.

I love the show, the pay off for Lars' slow burn character development was beautiful.

I hate how Cartoon Network chooses to constantly put the show on hiatus.

I'm looking forward to playing the Save the Light game this fall.

We came third with 33 points (2nd was 33.5 and 1st was 42). One of the rounds was Comic Books and for all of the multiple choice questions, I'd written the answer in before the Quizmaster had finished reading the question. 5/5

I was super excited about the Rescue Bots news before I heard DC Douglas and Imari Williams have confirmed they're not involved with the project. Now I'm wondering if it isn't just that YouTube CYOA series that was talked about. My hope, though, based on the title, is that we're getting a series set at the mainland base and/or focused on new rescue team members and featuring the old crew as guest stars.

Y'know the more people support the bullshit of Seceret Empire the more punishing events we get from it thanks to the cynical fan base.

With that I'm tired of being quiet and I am just done fuck nick Spencer and fuck that piece shit for making this last a fucking two years just to stretch this bulkshit for the trades. All ask is some good characterization and exploration along with world building instead I get the sequel to fucking Superior Spider-man that caters to the jaded and cynical.

Okay I think that covers every rule I broke on scan daily mods. Proceed to ban me if you please.

Shin Godzilla was way better than I expected. Whenever I need an exemplar of how a reboot can truly respect the spirit of the original, I'll be pointing to it. (Even though I missed most of the dialogue—turns out German movie theaters are also into dubbing films; who woulda thought?)

I've still not gotten to see it, having not been able to get to any UK screenings. I'm just hoping there's a DVD/Blu-Ray/online release for the UK in the near future; I've only seen a handful of spoilers, but love the Godzilla designs and think it seems like a smart, contemporary update. The same can't be said for Anno's own Eva reboot, which.. Loved 1.11 and 2.22, but it just seems to have gone off the rails with 3.33.
