I'd forgotten how wildly out of character Shocker was in this.

Just out of curiousity, what *is* Shocker's character? I never quite read a story, at least pre Superior Foes of Spiderman that had him as any more developed than "uses vibrations to steal."

But then, there are plenty of stories I hadn't read.

Usually if he gets any characterization at all its some combination of pragmatic, cowardly, underachieving, and professional.

Its never been "aggressive racist"

Yeah, Shocker's always been a blue collar criminal... either a solo act or part of a group but never really the boss. Intelligent enough to develop his own gear, but not a genius. You get the feeling he'd go legit if he didn't enjoy the challenge of being a criminal...and if he could only get over his need to get one over on Spider-Man after all these years.

Actually never really saw him as having that much of a grudge against Spider-Man. Sure they fight when they have to but it isn't like he has a vendetta. He originally joined the Sinister Syndicate to get protection from the Scourge of the Underworld and he did the same thing with the Sinister Six when Kaine started killing villains.

It's best if we don't talk about the Sinister Twelve. Nothing about that team makes sense.

So when... was it She-Hulk? She-Hulk discovered Shocker had brain-damage from the years of vibrations he endured using his gear (and not less the beatings he took fighting Spider-Man *cough*Superiorstoryline*cough*) I can kinda write off his shifting personality as a result of that.

Though one wonders how he designed the gauntlets and suit but didn't think, "gee, better make sure there's sufficient bracing in the neck and buffering in the head so I don't LIQUEFY my brain."

I always interpreted that as Shocker trying to suck up to Golembuski after having severely misinterpreted his question. Given that the Golem has some deadpan to him, it was probably a deliberate trap.

No idea why he suddenly hates Jack O'Lantern, though.

That was my take too.

And they worked fine together, so i don't think he actually hated Jack O'Lantern. I forget which Jack O'Lantern this was though.

Shocker needs more respect, since he was always a "high B, low A" Spider-Man villain. He always gives Spider-Man a hard time, but it was never personal. Shultz never found out the secret identity, or had any connection to Peter Parker's friends. Thus, he never got "major props."

Ever read "Polarity"? It was a fanfic that have Shocker props.

Oh god, was it the one where Shocker and Black Cat are a thing? I remember reading about that years ago, heard it's pretty terrible

Good gawd, no! No, this is the one where a zombie apocalypse hits the Marvel Universe (this happened before Zombie!Marvel actually) and Shocker ends up saving the day.

You're thinking of Shocker: Legit. It had it's moments, but I wasn't a huge fan.

Yeah, I didn't care much for Shocker: Legit either. Herman becomes absurb in his awesomeness, while Black Cat ends up demoted to ineffectual love interest. The most interesting thing about it is author Max Landis's Hollywood success.
