Jody's thing about toughening up Jesse is so sadly common, it isnt a cliche.
"I kept you tough for this world." "Because of you, I constantly think random strangers on the street are going to attack me!" "They are. You're welcome."
Yeah I was noticing that too, it's even Steve Dillon drawing them both. Were they just making fun of themselves or something? That whole run is pretty ridiculous
What's always hit me hardest, and has stayed with me the longest, about Jody's death is that the bastard won. By provoking that kind of violence in Jesse, he proved his sick, sadistic point and showed he was "right" - in his own mind, anyway - to have treated Jesse so badly for so long. Granted he's still wrong in a moral, ethical and cosmic sense, but he goes to his grave convinced of his righteousness and leaves Jesse belittled, just one more time, as he does.
I hate it when that happens in fiction and yet I love it at the same time, because it's so frustrating and real and adds depth to stories.
To be fair, this is a setting where Hell is real, so it's not as if that's the end of the matter. Dude probably spends every day watching all the people he tried to toughen up dance around a field in robes singing "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In" without being able to interrupt them.
Here with the fire and before where he commands a guy to die, are the only times the Word can affect a physical change to things (instead of just "the anti-life equation" of telling people what to do). Always wished the story touched on this more - that the Word might in fact remake reality, if Jesse commanded it.
