Since when is Magik a spellcaster on Earth-616?

In Limbo, yes, absolutely, but on Earth her only powers were one bout of astral projection and her soul sword's ability to break spells. I always took that to mean that her Limbo magic is just non-compatible with any school of Earth magic.

During Bendis' run she time travelled to before AvX and spent time as Doctor Strange's apprentice so that she could control her mystical powers even while on Earth

eh I don't mind. it means she can do more. Maybe her powers are more powerful on Limbo, since it's her land, and here they are weaker. I like her being able to do more, and makes her name AND lineage more accurate.

Being more powerful is never as interesting to me as being limited but creative. Most of my favourites are not the powerful ones, but the ones who do more with less.

Eferything that gives Illyana some link outside of the X-Men is good in my book.
Hopefully, one day she'll be able to escape from them, Like Sam and Berto did.

She always had limited spellcasting capabilities even on earth (remember she was casting protective wards around buildings as early as the Demon Bear saga), but in Limbo or when manifesting her darkchilde form they'd get upgraded to Belasco's level.

True, but her use of magic on Earth was limited to about three issues before they decided that she'd have the sword and no more on Earth, and they stuck to that for decades.

To be fair, developing further powers is a mutant thing, New Mutant especially.

Um... since always? Remember in the old New Mutants when they thought the X-Men was dead, and it was Forges fault? Illyana went off to get her pound of flesh for her brother, and the New Mutants rushed to save her because Forge was a master Magus . And they arrived to find Illyana kicking the s..t out of Forges defenses in his place of power? And that time Magneto got a glimpse of Illyanas cuddly toys not actually being toys? And the Demon Bear trying to break her wards around the operating room? Dispelling the Baba Yaga imitating Demons spells at Xaviers?

Illyanas thing was that her magic style was black, and she did not care to use it more than absolutely necessary, stuff like making herself immune to telepathy and presumably hiding her vast Playgirl collection.

She can't, she's got telepathy, or diamond form, never both at the same time.

She does appear to be holding some sort of mysterious crystal in that last image (fragment of a Cosmic Cube perhaps) so that might be involved.

Telepathic manipulation doesn't have to be done constantly- just use it to make someone loyal and then turn it off and the loyalty remains.
