Wait, is Gordon and Thomas Wayne being old friends something Byrne made up or was it actually the case in the Silver Age?

It's varied from era to era I think.

For a while (in the 70's at least), since Lt Gordon was the person who investigated the Wayne's murders, he knew of them as prominent Gotham philanthropists, but didn't move in their social circles.

Gordon would occasionally make references to how Bruce's parents would feel about him being a playboy with no serious responsibilities but probably not as a friend of theirs, more wishing Bruce would get more involved in things..

When Gordon became someone who transferred into Gotham in Year One, it was done away with completely.

I think John is a little mistaken about these stories. They would occasionally reuse stories, covers were mandated by editors

and frankly I think things like actally showing the alien invasion slaughtering people in the 50s story with Bat-Mite and Mxy
